Then, just as seeing vaguely, even the bodhisattvas mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, although they have the Buddha-dhatu in their own bodies, merely see vaguely that they have it. Son of the lineage, for example, a young prince sitting happily, when the night passes, he rises from watching entertainment performances, and becomes dazzled by the sunlight, after careful examination, just as he can only vaguely see his own belt, so too, the bodhisattvas mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, merely see vaguely that they have the Buddha-dhatu in their own bodies. For example, a king's attendant, when enveloped in thick dark clouds at night, comes out from the king's palace, and as he walks towards his own home, in the flickering light, he sees seven herds of cattle coming from the side, and he thinks: Is this a cloud? Or a house? A gatehouse? Or something else? After careful examination, just as seeing vaguely, so too, the bodhisattvas mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, even though they have the Buddha-dhatu in their own bodies, merely vaguely think that they have the Tathagata-garbha in their own bodies. For example, a monk who reverently observes the precepts, in water without living beings, sees living beings with his own mind, and he thinks: Is this a living being? Or dust that has suddenly come? Is it a living being? After careful examination, just as seeing vaguely, so too, the bodhisattvas mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, even though they have the Tathagata-garbha in their own bodies, merely see vaguely that they have it. For example, when a person is enveloped in fog in the morning, seeing children walking to and fro, he thinks: Is this a cow? A buffalo? Or a vulture? After that, just as vaguely seeing that they are children, so too, the bodhisattvas mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, even though they have the Tathagata-garbha in their own bodies, merely see vaguely that they have it. For example, an image of a bodhisattva painted with colors on cloth

When spread out in the darkness of night, those with eyes, upon examining, might wonder: Is this the form of a Buddha? Or is it a red cloth? Or is it the form of a great Lord and Brahma? Just as one vaguely sees that beneath it is the form of a Bodhisattva, similarly, sons of good family, even the great Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, merely vaguely see that the Tathagatagarbha exists within their own bodies. Sons of good family, therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is extremely difficult to see; it is the realm of the Tathagata, not the realm of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Sons of good family, therefore, my teaching is to be understood by the wise; it is not in accordance with all the world. Questioner: If that is so, how are those with flesh eyes to see the subtle details? Answer: How are the gods of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception to see? This is the realm of the Buddhas themselves, not the realm of all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas; they should have faith only by conforming to the sutras. By doing so, they too will become those with correct views. Sons of good family, therefore, all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas should also, through the manner of this great Mahaparinirvana Sutra, believe that the Tathagatagarbha exists in their own bodies, and strive to be in accordance with the sutras. The Tathagatagarbha is the realm of the Tathagatas, not the realm of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Questioner: Blessed One, even for worldly beings, there is no establishment of a person (pudgala) within the realm of sentient beings. Answer: Sons of good family, for example, two people are friends; one is a king's son, and one is a poor man. They are affectionate towards each other, going to each other's homes and playing. Then, the poor man sees that the ornament in the king's son's hair is of good color, so he takes that hair ornament of the king's son and goes to another place. After that, the poor man sleeps at night on a roof without protection...
