Son of lineage, well done, well done! Those with sharp wisdom should act in this way. Son of lineage, furthermore, I shall explain the entry into the Tathāgatagarbha. If the self (ātman, आत्मन्, ātman, meaning: self) is stable and real, then there will be no end to suffering. If there is no self (anātman, अनात्मन्, anātman, meaning: no self), then all pure conduct will become meaningless. If all dharmas are without self, then this will lead to a nihilistic view. If the self is stable, then this will lead to an eternalistic view. If all dharmas are impermanent, then this will lead to a nihilistic view. If all dharmas are permanent, then this will lead to an eternalistic view. If all dharmas are suffering, then this will lead to a nihilistic view. If all dharmas are happiness, then this will lead to an eternalistic view. If one meditates on all dharmas as permanent, then one will grasp at nihilism. If one meditates on all as annihilated, then one will quickly grasp at permanence. For example, just as lotus-eating insects quickly devour people's heads and quickly abandon one dwelling for another, similarly, if one meditates on permanence, then by clinging to everything, one will become like a lotus-eating insect. Therefore, for other non-virtuous dharmas, one should meditate on suffering. For other virtuous dharmas, one should meditate on happiness. For other dharmas such as the aspects of afflictions, one should meditate on no-self. Since nirvāṇa has no basis or dwelling, for other dharmas such as the Tathāgatagarbha, one should meditate on self. For other things such as enjoyment, one should meditate on impermanence. For other dharmas such as the dharmas of the Tathāgata, one should meditate on permanence. The three bases and the suchness of liberation are not like the eating of lotus-eating insects. The Buddha's teachings are the Middle Way. Know that the Buddha, the Blessed One, taught the Middle Way, which abandons both extremes of nihilism and eternalism. And so on. King of Medicine, because the Tathāgatagarbha exists, the Tathāgatagarbha is from the beginning an unconditioned essence, and the afflictions are adventitious. Therefore, whoever wishes to become a Buddha should destroy the aspects of the afflictions. For example, the sky...

If thunder sounds in the sky, mushrooms will quickly grow abundantly. In spring, there isn't even the name of mushrooms. Just as thunder appears, the Tathagatagarbha is also obscured by afflictions, appearing as if it were without self. Those who hear this great sutra, as soon as they hear the Great Nirvana, just like mushrooms, the wisdom of the Tathagatagarbha will arise. All the sutras and all the samadhis are like springtime. By hearing all the sutras and all the samadhis, one does not truly understand the existence of the Tathagatagarbha. Just as mushrooms grow in the summer sky, all the secret meanings of the Great Nirvana Sutra will appear. As soon as this sutra is heard, just as mushrooms grow in the summer sky, all sentient beings will truly understand the existence of the Tathagatagarbha. Because it expands great meaning, it is called the Great Nirvana. Those who study this great Great Nirvana Sutra are doing me a favor. Question: The Tathagatagarbha of the Blessed One is very difficult for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to see, very difficult to understand, and very difficult to endure. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, it is just so. Son of good family, it is just so, and I also say just that. Question: How is it difficult to see? The Buddha said: Son of good family, for example, there are a hundred blind people, and these blind people, wishing to see, seek a great eye doctor, and the doctor performs eye surgery on them. The doctor clears the cataracts from their eyes, and then extends one finger, saying to each one: Hey, look at my finger, do you think the treatment is good or bad, has it appeared? Even if the treatment is completed, no matter how the finger is shown, they cannot see it. Having shown it two or three times, they still cannot see it, just like that. Son of good family, having attained the ten bhumis

The Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, all the pure observations are the same as this. Even though they are so purified, I would point out to them, just like to that person, two or three times, that they themselves possess the Tathagatagarbha. They have not seen it, and once they see it, they will say: 'We have also been surrounded by the wheel of non-self alone for such a long time, and can only see the slightest traces of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas.' Noble son, therefore, entering the Dharma of my realm is delightful to see. Noble son, again, for example, someone sees swans soaring and hovering in the sky, and after seeing this, he has doubts, thinking: 'Is this the sky? Or are the swans flying?' After careful observation, he finds that it is the swans flying, which is a delusion caused by obscurity. Similarly, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis will also think that they themselves possess the Tathagatagarbha, which is a delusion caused by obscurity, and the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas can only see the slightest traces. For example, someone is walking on the road, and his bile is disturbed, and he loses his way. After careful observation, he finds that the road and the scenery are obscure. Similarly, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, after careful observation, will find that their bodies have a realm that is not made by the Tathagatagarbha, which is merely a delusion caused by obscurity. For example, a guest is suffering from thirst and cannot find water in the wilderness. He is longing for water, sitting, and sees birds perched on the trees, thinking: 'Is this a palace? Or is it the sky?' After careful observation, he finds that it is the birds, which is a delusion caused by obscurity. Noble son, similarly, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis will also think that their bodies possess the Tathagatagarbha, which is merely a delusion caused by obscurity. Noble son, for example, a person on a ship at sea sees a white palace in a city many yojanas away, and he thinks: 'Is this the sky? Or is it a palace?' After careful observation
