It also refers to the divine sovereign, the king of Brahma, and the king of dominion. Liberation is not like that; if one becomes manifestly enlightened in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, there is no desire, no doubt. Where there is no desire, there is no doubt, and that is true liberation. True liberation is the Thus-Gone One. If one says that liberation has desire or doubt, that is not the case. Furthermore, liberation is the complete cutting off of the desire for existence, all characteristics, all clinging, all defilements, all cycles of existence, all causes and conditions, and all ripened fruits. Thus, such liberation is the Thus-Gone One. The Thus-Gone One is nirvana. And so on. Son of good family, what is called the nature of the Buddha is ultimate emptiness. Ultimate emptiness is called wisdom. Therein, what is called emptiness is not seeing both emptiness and non-emptiness. The wise see all: emptiness and non-emptiness, permanence and impermanence, suffering and happiness, self and no-self. What is called emptiness is all of cyclic existence; what is called non-emptiness is complete nirvana. Up to no-self is cyclic existence. What is called no-self is complete nirvana. Seeing all as empty, but not seeing non-emptiness, is not called the Middle Way. Seeing all up to no-self, but not seeing self, is not called the Middle Way. What is called the Middle Way is the nature of the Buddha. Therefore, the nature of the Buddha is permanent, unchanging, and unmoving, but it is not seen by all sentient beings who are obscured by ignorance. Hearers and solitary realizers see all as empty, but they do not see non-emptiness; from there, they see all as no-self, but they do not see self. Therefore, they have not attained ultimate emptiness. Because they have not attained ultimate emptiness, they do not practice the Middle Way; because there is no Middle Way, they do not see the nature of the Buddha. And so on. Blessed One, for example, a great city

Outside of a pond, a tree had previously grown in a grove of Sal trees. When it reached a hundred years, the owner of the grove would regularly water and cultivate it. When the bark of that tree rotted, the bark, leaves, and branches all fell to the ground, leaving only the heartwood inside. The Tathagata is also like that; all the rotten parts are exhausted, and only the pure Dharma remains. And so on. Also, Devacandra translated: The Tathagata is permanent, steadfast, and eternal. Questioner: Lord, you have said that just as a extinguished lamp, there is no place to be found where it went. Similarly, the state of Nirvana of the Tathagata is also similar to that. Since that is the case, how is the Tathagata permanent, steadfast, and eternal? The Buddha replied: Son of good family, Nirvana is not described as being like the place of a lamp. Son of good family, like this, whether it is a man or a woman, fills a large or small container with butter or sesame oil, and then lights a fire. The flame of the lamp will burn as long as there is sesame oil, and when the sesame oil is exhausted, the lamp will be extinguished. Here, the cessation of afflictions is shown to be like the extinguishing of a lamp. The Tathagata is permanent like a container. If the cessation of afflictions is like a lamp and sesame oil, will the container also disappear like the lamp? Questioner: Lord, that is not the case. It is impossible for there to be no container. Then, will the Tathagata also be regarded as being like a container? If the Tathagata is like a container of sesame oil, then would the Tathagata also be said to be exhausted? The Buddha replied: The Tathagata is like a container, and that which is supremely permanent is the Tathagata. Therefore, Nirvana is always supremely blissful. And so on, it is said very much. Some also think that this sutra is a Mind-Only sutra, but that is not the case. Because the twelve scriptures and the Prajnaparamita are also said to be the ultimate essence. Devacandra translated: From the twelve scriptures, the Sutra Pitaka arises. The Sutra Pitaka

From that arises the very extensive category. From the very extensive Sutra category arises Prajñāpāramitā. From Prajñāpāramitā arises the great complete Nirvāṇa, like the essence of butter. The so-called essence of butter is an example of Buddha-nature. The so-called Buddha-nature is the Tathāgata. Thus it is said. Furthermore, identifying the uncommon Four Noble Truths and showing with many examples that all sentient beings possess the Sugata-garbha is what is stated in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra translated by Devacandra: He requested: "Bhagavan, I initially resided in the Buddha's teachings." He instructed: "Son of good family, excellent, excellent! Son of good family, you are excellent; a wise person should act in this way." Again he instructed: "Son of good family, this is suffering." This is not to be called the truth of the noble ones, because suffering also exists in oxen and donkeys, and also in hell beings. If suffering were the truth, then their suffering would also be the truth. This so-called suffering, alas, the so-called knowing suffering, is knowing that the Tathāgata is eternal. He is the Dharma-kāya, not the fleshly body. Thus, knowing the greatness of the Tathāgata is knowing suffering. Until that is attained, sentient beings will completely conceive of what is not Dharma as Dharma. Thus, being completely attached, in the cycle of saṃsāra, in a place of extreme suffering, having long experienced suffering, they will eventually go to bad destinies. When one knows that the Tathāgata is eternal, even if one hears something like a two-syllable word, one will go to a good destiny. Then one will also attain liberation. Therefore, one will realize for oneself that this is the bliss of magical power. Just by the cause of hearing the words "the Tathāgata is eternal," I have come here. Until I knew that the Tathāgata is eternal, I would again revolve in suffering for that long. That is knowing suffering; this is the truth. The suffering of others
