It is okay even if it is not there. What is called a jar of honey and water? If the jar is empty, or if those things are not there, is the jar itself empty? Even if it has form and color, how can it be said to be empty? Liberation is not empty in that way, even if liberation also has form and color perfectly. How is it? Even if a yogurt jar is not empty, because there is no yogurt, just as it is called empty, liberation is also called empty even though it is not empty. Even though it has form, how is it called empty? What is called emptiness is because there are no aspects of afflictions, and the twenty-five terms of existence, and suffering, and worldly dharmas, and rituals and objects of conduct. Just as a yogurt jar is without yogurt, liberation is called empty, because in it, like the form of a jar that does not move, there is mostly happiness, and joy, and permanence, and stability, and steadfastness, and transcendental dharma, and rituals and objects of conduct. Liberation, like the form of a jar, is permanent, stable, and steadfast, but the jar will break, it is only established in terms of cause. Liberation is not made, therefore it will not break, and what is liberation, that is the unconditioned realm itself, that is the Tathagata. And so on. When the Tathagata teaches that liberation is without characteristics, empty, and nothing at all, then liberation is separate from the twenty-five existences. It should be understood that it is taught in this way, therefore it is called empty. Because there is no suffering in it, therefore there is no suffering at all, and it is supreme bliss and without characteristics. Because there is no impermanence, instability, unsteadfastness, and non-peaceful nature in it, therefore liberation is permanent, stable, steadfast, and peaceful, that itself is the Tathagata. When the Tathagata teaches that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, then one should also truly cultivate permanence. Monks, those who cultivate in this way are my Shravakas. Thus he says.

Thus and so forth, there are extremely many, and it is also transmitted from China. Furthermore, liberation is the "emptiness of non-emptiness." What is called "emptiness of emptiness" is that there is nothing at all. Having nothing at all is like the liberation of the naked heretics and so on. The naked ones do not have true liberation, so it is called "emptiness of emptiness." True liberation is not like that, so it is the "emptiness of non-emptiness." The "emptiness of non-emptiness" is true liberation. True liberation is the Tathagata. Furthermore, liberation is non-empty. For example, a container (rdze'u) for water, butter, yogurt, wine, and honey is like that. Even if there is no water, butter, yogurt, wine, or honey, it is still called a container for water and so on. That container cannot be called empty. Because it cannot be called empty, one cannot say that it has form, smell, taste, or touch. Because it cannot be called non-empty, there is no water or anything like that. Liberation is also similar to this; one cannot say that it has form, or is formless, or is empty, or is non-empty. If it is said to be empty, one cannot say that it is permanent, blissful, self, or pure. If it is said to be non-empty, then who experiences permanence, bliss, self, and purity? Because that is the way things are, one cannot say that it is empty or non-empty. It is like this: because there are no twenty-five existences, all afflictions, all sufferings, all signs, and all conditioned formations, it is like a container without yogurt, so it is called empty. What is called non-empty is true form, permanence, bliss, self, and purity, which are unmoving and unchanging. For example, a container has form, smell, taste, and touch, so it is called non-empty. Therefore, liberation is like that container. That container will break when it encounters conditions, but liberation is not like that; it is indestructible. What is indestructible is true liberation. True liberation is the Tathagata. Furthermore, liberation is being free from desire. For example, a person has a mind of desire, so he is Indra.
