Those who are endowed with fortune should each recognize that the very nature of the ultimate mind, luminous, is the emptiness of the Dharmakaya, which possesses all perfections. With the eye of non-conceptual wisdom of equanimity, it will be clearly seen. That is its meaning. An explanation elaborating on that: For example, the entire ground of Jambudvipa, completely free from dangerous places such as cliffs and abysses, manifests the luminous nature of immaculate beryl. Its shape is beautiful, possessing the various immaculate qualities of jewels, radiant. The top is entirely flat like the palm of a hand, and it is pure, clear, and immaculate, like the surface of a mirror. There, the abode of the lord of gods, such as the excellent palace of victory, and the lord of the gods, Indra, and many other kinds of gods, and the images of endless divine enjoyments appear. Eventually, as it gradually departs from the manifest qualities of the ground, those images will disappear again. Relying on the appearance of the images, in order to obtain the enjoyment of Indra, those men and women who are devoted to the eight-limbed fast and other austerities, and diligently give and make offerings, with a mind desiring to obtain the position of a god, scatter and offer flowers and incense, like being immersed in various beautiful things. Similarly, in order to attain the state of purity of one's own mind, which is like pure beryl, in order to attain the state of the Sage, those Bodhisattvas who have a mind of great joy towards the Buddha, just as people do good deeds to obtain the position of a god, generate the supreme Bodhicitta and strive to practice the six perfections. This means that just as images do not appear on an impure ground, those who do not have fortune do not see the Buddha. That is its meaning.

In short, the way to show the absence of arising and ceasing is: Just as in the human world, when the ground of lapis lazuli is free from dust and other impurities and is pure, the image of the body of the lord of the gods, complete with enjoyment, appears; similarly, for the beings to be tamed, when the ground of their minds is free from impurities such as disbelief and is pure, the image of the body of the Buddha, complete with excellent marks, appears. Thus, the appearance and disappearance of the image of the Buddha's body to the beings to be tamed is due to the power of one's own mind, which is pure and without defilements, being fully absorbed, thus the form body appears; and due to the power of one's own mind, which is full of impurities such as disbelief and is impure, being fully absorbed, thus the form body disappears. Just as in the human world, the image of the lord of the gods appears and disappears due to the purity or impurity of the ground, but the lord of the gods himself does not move from his own place; similarly, due to the purity or impurity of the beings to be tamed, the form body appears to arise and cease, but in terms of ultimate truth, the Dharma body does not have what is called arising and ceasing, because it is unconditioned and unchanging. That is the teaching. There are three ways to ascertain the way of teaching the essential instructions by the example of the drum: the way of teaching the Dharma like the drum of the gods, the way it is superior to other examples, and the way these also arise from conditions. Regarding the way of teaching, a detailed explanation is given of the reasons why the example and the meaning are consistent, and it is skillfully summarized again. There are three points in the detailed explanation, first is the reason for the absence of effort: Just as in the realm of the gods, all the gods, due to the power of accumulating meritorious deeds of white virtue in the past, do not need to make efforts such as wanting to speak to the great drum, nor do they need a place for the sound to arise such as the tongue and palate, nor do they need the mind and the distinctions of motivation, but the sound "all conditioned things are impermanent, all contaminated things are suffering" arises.

All are without self, all nirvana is peaceful. With this sound, the gods who are distracted by the pleasures of desire and have become negligent are repeatedly encouraged to do good, just like a great Dharma drum. Similarly, the Buddhas who have attained complete enlightenment, although free from the effort of wanting to teach "this should be taught, that should be taught," pervade all beings to be tamed with the Buddha's speech that corresponds to their respective languages. For those who possess the three types of faculties, they also teach the vast Dharma of the three vehicles. So it is said. The way in which things arise from karma is: Just as in the heavenly realms, the sound of the great drum of the gods proclaims the four seals of Dharma, this is because the gods have previously accumulated pure and virtuous karma in common. Similarly, in the world, the Teacher, the fully enlightened Buddha, also speaks of limitless Dharma doors in accordance with the minds of those to be tamed, and this is also due to the power of sentient beings accumulating vast virtuous karma. So it is said. The way to accomplish peace is: Just as the sound of the great drum, which is free from the effort of wanting to speak, the place where the sound arises, the body associated with the mind, and the consciousness that generates conceptual thoughts, pacifies the negligence of the gods, similarly, through the door of being free from the four dharmas such as effort, this Dharma, which is spoken in accordance with each person's faculties, can also cause the attainment of the state of peace and nirvana in the minds of limitless beings to be tamed. So it is said. The summary is: Just as in the cities of the gods, the cause of proclaiming the sound of the great Dharma drum is to bestow fearlessness, that is, when the gods fight with the Asuras due to the affliction of anger, the sound of "do not be afraid" is emitted, thereby eliminating the fear of the Asura army winning. Also, due to the affliction of desire, they are attached to the happiness of indulging in pleasurable delights.
