That which is to be abandoned by cultivation, especially the uncommon aspects in the continuum of a Bodhisattva who has not reached the ultimate, from the first to the seventh bhūmi, which can be destroyed by the wisdom of cultivating the three pure bhūmis, that is what is to be abandoned based on the impure bhūmi. In the continuum of a Bodhisattva who has reached the ultimate, the uncommon aspects of the three pure bhūmis, which can be destroyed by the vajra-like samādhi, that is what is to be abandoned based on the pure bhūmi. Thus, from the perspective of being easy to understand roughly, the nine stains such as desire are symbolized and clearly shown in order by the nine examples of the lotus flower's pistil and bees, etc. The Tathāgatagarbha is obscured, the pistil of the afflictions that are close, if distinguished in detail by the difference of substances, then there are eighty-four thousand, and the differences are limitless and boundless, etc. Just like the differences of the Tathāgata's wisdom are limitless. The way it obscures the dharmadhātu is that the Bhagavan said that all sentient beings have the Tathāgatagarbha. The obscuration of this statement is obscured by these nine adventitious stains, the types of sentient beings that are obscured are ordinary people, Arhats of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, those who are commonly on the path of learning, and especially Bodhisattvas with wisdom, are all impure. In short, as mentioned above, in order, with the nine examples of the lotus flower's pistil, bees, chaff, impure places, etc., the essence of the Buddha's honey is shown, and gold, etc., show the pure dharmadhātu. The first four obscurations are the latent tendencies of the three poisons, these higher realms make ordinary people impure, these intensely arising desire realm ordinary people are impure, Arhats, learners, those with wisdom, in order, have four kinds of impurity. This is also in order, the first four obscurations.

The predispositions of the three poisons make the children of the higher realms impure; the forceful arising of these makes the children of the desire realm impure; ignorance and habitual tendencies make the Arhats impure. Similarly, what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by meditation both make the ordinary beings and the noble ones impure; the impurity based on the seven impure grounds and the impurity based on the three pure grounds both make the Bodhisattvas who have not reached the end and those who have reached the end impure. Because each individual mainly possesses the specific objects to be abandoned, it hinders the direct realization of the ultimate Dharma realm. That is what is said. The individual examples are explained in detail as follows: For example, a lotus flower newly grows from the mud, and as soon as it appears before the viewer, it brings great joy, but soon after it withers and becomes joyless. Similarly, the predisposition of afflictive desire, arising from improper attention, manifests as attachment, which brings joy, but when it fades, there is no joy. Therefore, the joy of seeing a lotus is the same. Thus, the predisposition of desire is like a lotus. Similarly, just as a bee, a creature attached to honey, becomes extremely agitated with hatred when someone takes the honey, brandishing its stinger and causing pain, so too, when the predisposition of afflictive hatred increases and anger arises, it causes the pain of stinging in the hearts of oneself and others. Therefore, the predisposition of hatred is like a bee. For example, the essence of grains, such as rice, is covered by the outer husk and chaff, so it is not visible. Similarly, the essence of the Tathagata, the naturally luminous meaning of the Dharma realm, is obscured by the predisposition of ignorance and delusion, which are like eggshells, so it is not seen. Therefore, the predisposition of delusion is

Like chaff. How so? An impure object is a distressing and unpleasant place. Similarly, for those with attachment to the desire realm, relying on sensual pleasures and the like is the cause of many misdeeds. The fierce manifestations arising from the three poisons of affliction, like a great impure corpse, are a place of weariness and disgust. Therefore, the manifestation of the three poisons is like an impure object. How so? A great treasure of inexhaustible wealth is covered and hidden by much earth, and the poor do not know that there is treasure, just as they cannot obtain it. Similarly, for beings who are like the poor, the self-arising wisdom that possesses inexhaustible qualities is obscured by the earth of ignorance and habitual tendencies, just as they cannot see it. Therefore, being possessed by the habitual tendencies of ignorance is like earth. How so? Just as the sprouts, trunks, and branches of trees gradually grow, and the husks of the seeds are gradually peeled away. Similarly, by gradually realizing the ultimate truth of the realm of phenomena, the afflictions that are to be abandoned through realization will gradually diminish. Therefore, what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by cultivation are like fruit peels. The noble path directly sees the nature of the four truths, and in connection with this, the essence or main part of what is to be abandoned, such as the view of the aggregates as self and what belongs to self, is what is to be abandoned by seeing. The nature that exists in the continuum of the Arhats and others has already been directly realized, and what is to be abandoned by the wisdom of the path of cultivation is the remainder of the coarse that has been exhausted, or it is shown to be like tattered clothes with stains. Therefore, what is to be abandoned by cultivation is like tattered clothes, and the stains that depend on the impure seven grounds obscure what is to be seen and require effort, like the stains of the womb. Just as one is freed from the womb, being liberated from those stains, starting from the eighth ground and so on...
