Just as one dwells in the womb without recognizing it, dwelling in a house without a master or protector, experiencing great suffering such as being despised by others. Similarly, although the master, the Buddha, the self-luminous nature of mind, dwells within ourselves, because we do not recognize it, beings with the thought that they are without a master or protector, being controlled by sudden afflictions, their minds are extremely unpeaceful, and they engage in actions with outflows, thus becoming the basis for experiencing suffering such as fear in samsara. So it is said. Like a golden statue in clay, the state of the Dharma realm is also like this for sentient beings. The detailed explanation of how to purify the defilements of the Dharma realm is divided into two: the example that represents and the meaning that is represented. Among them, the first is the example that represents: Just as a statue made of molten gold in clay, its size and characteristics are large and beautiful, its own essence is pure and without defilement, but because it is covered with ordinary black clay on the outside, some knowledgeable people, after seeing it, in order to remove and purify the dirt in that beautiful gold, use various methods to remove the black clay and other coverings on the outside. So it is said. The meaning that is represented is: The nature of mind, the Tathagatagarbha, is originally luminous and pure, and the defilements of afflictions such as desire are also sudden and can be removed. If one can recognize this, like a statue made of precious and beautiful gold, beings whose origin is like a lump of clay covered with mud, in order to completely remove the sudden defilements that obscure the view of the Dharma realm, the act of teaching the supreme path of liberation is the attainment of perfect and complete enlightenment of the Buddha. So it is said. Again, in order to combine it better and make it clear, just as the nature is pure and without defilement

Just as a statue made of pure, high-quality gold, radiating brilliant light, is placed in black soil during the casting process. A wise and discerning person can recognize that the essence of the statue is pure and unblemished. Then, through skillful methods, such as gently tapping, they gradually remove the mud and other impurities that obscure the statue. Similarly, the wisdom of the Buddha, who fully and clearly understands all phenomena, knows that the nature of mind, the Tathagatagarbha, which is like a pure, high-quality gold statue, is inherently free from afflictions and pervades all beings. Knowing this, the Buddha, according to each individual's capacity, uses methods similar to tools for removing mud, in the form of teaching the Dharma, to eliminate the adventitious defilements that obscure the manifestation of the true nature. This is the meaning. In summary, the following illustrates the principle of beginninglessness: The unpleasant color of a lotus, living insects, grain husks, impure mud, earth, tree bark, rotten and smelly clothes, a woman's womb, the inside of black mud, and so on, are examples used to represent defilements. While a Buddha adorned with excellent marks, honey full of essence, the essence of rice and other grains, unchanging pure gold, an inexhaustible treasure, a tree laden with fruit, a beautiful jewel statue, a king ruling with the wheel, a statue of high-quality gold, and so on, are examples used to represent essence. What these examples convey is that the afflictions that obscure the nature of beings, although not part of that nature but adventitious, have co-existed with the Dharmadhatu from beginningless time.

. It is also abiding nearby. Wherever those exist, there, the nature of sentient beings' minds, the Tathagatagarbha, is primordially stainless, and the wisdom that is born together with it has been abiding nearby since beginningless time. So it is said. The combination of the two, defilements and essence, each with similar qualities, is twofold: the way in which adventitious defilements are particularly represented, and the way in which the nature of the Dharmadhatu is particularly represented. There are four ways of representing defilements: the classification of obscuring defilements, the way in which they obscure the realm of beings, the detailed combination of individual examples and meanings, and the re-collection of those general meanings. Among them, the classification of obscuring defilements is: the adventitious defilements that obscure the naturally pure Dharmadhatu are, in summary, nine types in terms of categories. That is, those that exist in the continuum that is not separated from worldly desire, the cause of immovable actions, the attainment of the form and formless realms, which are to be destroyed by transcendental wisdom, are the latent tendencies of desire, the latent tendencies of hatred, and the latent tendencies of ignorance, the non-virtuous abodes of those, or the three seeds counted individually, those that exist in the continuum that is not separated from desire and so on, the cause of meritorious and non-meritorious actions, the attainment of the desire realm alone, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of meditating on the unattractive and so on, are the intense arising of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the three poisons manifested as one, those that exist in the continuum of the Arhats, the cause of engaging in uncontaminated actions, the attainment of the mind-made body, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of great Bodhi, are those that are included in the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies, in common, those that exist in the continuum of ordinary individuals who are learning, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of directly seeing the truth of Dharma, are what are to be abandoned by seeing, and those that exist in the continuum of the noble ones who are learning, the truth of Dharma having already been directly seen, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of the path of meditation, are what
