Because of its purity. The faults and afflictions of sentient beings, etc., never come close or taint it. This is what it means. There are five extensive explanations: the appearance of arising and ceasing in phenomena, the absence of destruction in the nature of reality, the indication of the reality of these, the reason for wandering in samsara due to suddenness, and the reason for the immutability of inherent nature. Among these, the appearance of arising and ceasing is: For example, the external vessel world, in all its aspects, relies on the open space of the sky. It first arises and forms, and eventually decays and ceases, but the sky has no arising or ceasing. Similarly, the Dharma realm, which is not manifestly assembled by causes and conditions, the Tathagatagarbha, which is immutable, relies on this. The inner faculties of sentient beings first arise and grow, and eventually decay and cease, but the nature of reality has no arising or ceasing. This is what it means. The reason for the absence of destruction in the nature of reality is: For example, created things are burned by the three fires of the end of time, hell, and inherent nature, but the uncreated sky is never burned by any of these three fires. Similarly, sentient beings are burned by the three fires of death, etc., but the essence, the Dharma realm, is never burned by these three fires of death, the fire of the end of time, the fire of disease and hell, and the fire of old age and inherent nature. This is what it means. Indicating the reality of these, there are examples, meanings, and the combination of these. Among these, the example is: When the world forms and exists, the great earth mandala relies on the water mandala, the water relies on the wind mandala, and the wind relies on the sky to exist. However, the sky does not depend on causes and conditions. Therefore, the wind mandala, the water mass, and the earth element, etc., do not rely on any created thing to exist. This is how it is said. The meaning is: Just like this example, the five aggregates, the eighteen realms, the faculties, and the twelve sources of objects, all the afflictions of birth, etc., included with outflows, are what these produce.

The causes and all the afflictions are able to abide, as well as afflictions. The conceptual thoughts that grasp impermanence as permanence, and so on, based on improper attention, constantly abide. Improper attention is the self-nature of the mind, the clear light, based on the naturally pure realm of phenomena, and is able to abide. However, the self-nature of the mind, the clear light, the ultimate reality of suchness, is unconditioned. Improper attention, afflictions, karma, and the afflictions of birth, these adventitious phenomena, for everything, at no time do they depend and abide. Thus it is said. Combining these, just as the mandala of the earth is formed relying on water, the five aggregates along with the aggregates of appropriation, the twelve sources, and the eighteen elements, it should be known that they are accomplished relying on karma and afflictions, just as the water element acts as the cause for the accomplishment of the earth mandala, the sentient beings' contaminated karma and afflictions are the causes for the accomplishment of the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen elements, it should be known as such. Improper attention is the cause of arousing karma and afflictions, so it should be viewed and understood as the wind element acts as the support of the water mandala. The self-nature of the mind, the Tathagatagarbha, is like the space element acting as the support of everything, yet not abiding in anything, acting as the support of adventitious phenomena, its own essence does not depend on any basis, nor does it abide anywhere. Thus it is said. The way in which adventitious phenomena cause cyclic existence is, for example, just as the mandala of wind abides in space, clinging to things that do not conform to the reality of things, the conceptual thoughts of improper attention are, abiding in the way of obscuring the self-nature of the mind, the clear light, the realm of phenomena, just as wind acts as the support of water, improper attention and so on are the causes of birth in cyclic existence, contaminated karma.

and so on. Such afflictions, such as desire, greatly open up opportunities and cause them to grow. Just as the great earth is formed from churning a mass of water, the water of karma and afflictions, karma is the aggregates, sources, and realms, as well as the contaminated, and the births encompassed by suffering arise. In short, just as in the unconditioned realm of space, due to the power of time, the outer world, the old newly destroyed, the new newly formed. In the uncontaminated realm of dharma, beings, due to the power of discrimination and the three contaminations, first born, finally destroyed. So it is said. The reason why nature does not change is: the nature of the mind, the clear light dharma realm, is like the unconditioned realm of space, not depending on the proximate cause, not depending on the co-occurring condition. Therefore, it does not depend on the gathering of these. Therefore, there is no first birth, final destruction, and middle dwelling, so it is always unchanged by the three conditioned dharmas. So it is said. The meaning is summarized as: the nature of the mind of all sentient beings, the clear light, the Tathagatagarbha, is like the nature of space, which is not changed by clouds and smoke. It is always unchanged by obscurations, purity, and impurity. The discriminations of clinging to the unreal, born from improper attention, and the afflictions such as greed, hatred, and delusion born from improper attention, and the contaminations of karma, and the contaminations of birth, etc., the removable adventitious stains, cannot make the dharma nature permanently contaminated, because it is pure in nature. So it is said. Explaining the differences between them, there is the difference of immutability, being free from birth and death, and the difference of change, being in harmony with the three fires. Among them, being free from birth and death is: the water of karma and afflictions
