Just as reflections appear and benefit others, so too, the Buddhas, without any effort of conceptualization or the like, from the very beginning, abide in the manifest Dharmakaya, which is without birth or cessation, without wavering. Therefore, in order to ensure that the endless existence of samsara for sentient beings is not in vain, they continuously display manifestations of the body, proclaim the instructions of speech, and pervade all with the wisdom and compassion of their minds, etc. These activities are spontaneously accomplished and proceed without interruption. This is its meaning. Although similar, there are two ways in which they are superior. The brief explanation is: These nine examples symbolize the activities of the Buddha, and the concise meaning of these examples will be explained by the treatises to be discussed below. Moreover, the reason for the definite order in which the latter example shows the former will also be explained. That is, the former examples do not fully represent all the activities of the Buddha, and whatever aspects are dissimilar are sequentially removed by the latter examples, and expressed through the way of showing similarity. This is its meaning. The detailed explanation is: The activities of the perfect Buddhas, like the appearance of Indra's image on a ground of lapis lazuli, show infinite manifestations of the body. However, the image has no voice, while the Buddha has the voice of teaching the Dharma, so they are not the same, but are exceedingly superior. Similarly, from the aspect of having the voice of teaching the Dharma, showing various instructions of speech is like the great drum of the gods proclaiming the four seals of the Dharma. However, the great drum is limited to one direction and does not pervade all, so it does not benefit all. But the Buddha pervades all the worlds of sentient beings to be tamed and benefits them, so it is not the same as the drum, but is exceedingly superior. Similarly, from the aspect of pervading all realms of the world, maturing sentient beings with wisdom and compassion is like a great cloud pervading all and ripening crops.
