The great sound of the drum, free from conceptual thoughts, is like the gods preventing carelessness. Similarly, this Dharma, spoken in accordance with each individual's fortune by means of being free from the four Dharmas such as effort, also causes limitless beings to attain the state of peace and Nirvana. That is what it says. In summary, just as in the cities of the gods, the sound of the great Dharma drum is proclaimed, giving fearlessness, because the gods, due to the power of anger, fight with the Asuras, so at the time of war, from the sound of saying "Do not be afraid" to the gods, it eliminates the fear of the Asura army's victory; when they are attached to the pleasure of enjoying sensual pleasures due to the power of desire, from the sound of the four summaries of the Dharma, it removes carelessness. Similarly, in the limitless world of those to be tamed, relying on the teaching of the Buddha's Dharma, through cultivating meditation and formless samadhi, etc., the root of virtue is increased, so it completely destroys the fear of all sentient beings' afflictions and suffering; from thoroughly proclaiming the method of the supreme path of peace and Nirvana, one can attain that state. That is what it says. Therefore, in the analogies, there are two aspects of being superior. Among them, the brief explanation of the superior aspect is: because it pervades all limitless beings to be tamed in accordance with their respective thoughts, it is not temporary; because it leads to the ultimate and definite good state, it is beneficial; because it leads to the joy of temporary elevation, it is happiness; because it possesses the three kinds of miracles of magical transformation, universal proclamation, and subsequent instruction, it is definitely liberating from suffering. Because it possesses the four qualities of Dharma, therefore, the melodious voice of the Sugata, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, proclaiming the Dharma, is far superior to the temporary, beneficial, happy, and non-liberating sounds of the gods.

That is so. The detailed explanation of the difference is: In the boundless realm of the gods, although the sound of drums is vast and pervasive, it is only a small portion that can be heard by sentient beings dwelling on the earth. However, the sound of the drums proclaiming the Dharma by the Buddhas, because the time is ripe, pervades all the worlds of those to be tamed, even the worlds beneath the earth, and is not just a small portion, therefore it is particularly superior. Similarly, it can be compared: The various beautiful and melodious sounds of musical instruments in the heavenly realms, although there are countless kinds, because of attachment to external objects and the enjoyment of sensual pleasures, only fuel the fire of desire and are of no benefit. But the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, who possess great compassion, even just one of the sounds they emit, can enable sentient beings with the capacity to completely extinguish the fire of suffering and its root, thereby attaining Nirvana, so it is beneficial, and therefore it is also particularly superior. The various beautiful and pleasing sounds of musical instruments in the heavenly realms, although they sound delightful, cause the mind to become coarse and distracted, so they are not true happiness. But the voice of the Tathagata, who possesses great compassion, guides those to be tamed to focus on meditation and samadhi, and encourages them to think, so it is happiness, and therefore it is also particularly superior. In short, the sounds of heavenly musical instruments do not necessarily bring liberation, but in whatever world, whether it is gods or beings such as humans dwelling here, what enables them to escape suffering and increase the great bliss free from defilements is the sound of the Buddhas, which pervades all the worlds through possessing the three kinds of miracles, therefore it can be relied upon to escape suffering, so it is also particularly superior. That is so. These are also the principles arising from causes and conditions, for example, if one loses the sense organ of hearing,

Just as the sound of a female monkey, some have never heard nor can hear. Similarly, those without merit cannot hear the Buddha's melodious voice, and even if they obtain divine ears, they cannot enter the path of hearing the Dharma, just as some are able to hear. Likewise, the Buddha's teachings are extremely subtle and profound, only the most refined wisdom can comprehend them, and not all beings to be tamed can hear them. Only those who are without afflictions, possess supreme wisdom, and have great merit can hear the Dharma. Thus it is said. There are four ways to ascertain the pervasiveness of wisdom and compassion through the analogy of clouds: combining the similarity of crop growth, combining the similarity of vessel transformation, combining the similarity of non-dependence, and combining the similarity of extinguishing flames. Within the similarity of crop growth, there are two aspects: First, briefly explaining the effortless manner: For example, in the summer season, dense clouds gather, and the crops of farmers flourish, rain falls, nourishing the earth, without any effort. Similarly, from the clouds of immeasurable great compassion, the nectar-like Dharma of all Buddhas descends like a great rain, causing the virtuous crops in the fields of beings to grow continuously, which also does not require any intention or effort, but is naturally accomplished. Thus it is said. Second, explaining the manner of arising from conditions: For example, when worldly beings enter the path of virtuous actions and act with mindfulness, through the blessings of the gods, a gentle breeze stirs, clouds gather, and rain gradually falls. Similarly, when the virtuous actions of beings to be tamed, such as faith and diligence, increase, the wind of great compassion of the Buddhas stirs, and the nectar-like Dharma descends. Therefore, the reason for being similar to clouds is that (the Dharma) exists within samsara.
