It is endowed with these qualities. Thus, the thirty-two major marks of excellence, which are inconceivable to ordinary people and whose splendor blazes forth, are the qualities of the excellent marks of the all-knowing lord of gods and humans, the great being, the king of men. They are clearly stated in the sutras, and these are also quoted here. It is said. To summarize by combining illustrative examples: For example, just as the full image of the autumn moon in a cloudless season is seen in the center of the sky, and just as the blue water of an autumn season is seen in a clear and stainless lake, in the same way, the ten-ground bodhisattvas and ordinary disciples will see the two forms of the all-pervading Buddha, the enjoyment body and the emanation body, in the mandala of the complete Buddha and in the mandala of the world, respectively. That is to say, for example, the enjoyment body seen by a bodhisattva is like the moon in the sky, and the emanation body seen by ordinary people is like the moon in the water. It is said. The way to understand from the scriptures is that the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and the thirty-two marks of a great being—these sixty-four qualities of a Buddha—each individually possesses the cause that makes the qualities of the Dharma body free from defilement, and the cause that gradually generates the qualities of the form body. Just as the number and order shown here are, one should understand them as they are according to the "Precious Question Sutra, Great Vehicle Instructions." It is said. Again, the teaching is twofold: a general explanation of the reasons why the examples and meanings are the same, and an explanation of these separately. The general explanation is that the ten powers of the Tathagata are like a vajra because they are unshakable by their respective dissimilar aspects, and the four fearlessnesses are unflinching in their confidence.

Therefore, (the Buddha) is similar to a lion. The eighteen unshared qualities, because they are dissimilar to and not in common with the Shravakas, etc., are therefore similar to space. The two form bodies with excellent marks, because the Dharma body is inseparable from space, appearing to those to be tamed without moving, are therefore similar to the moon. Therefore, these four categories of qualities are explained in order with the examples of the material object of the vajra, the king of beasts the lion, the unconditioned space, and the moon appearing in clear water. This is what was said. Separate explanations are divided into two parts: explaining the qualities of the Dharma body as the result of abandonment, and explaining the qualities of the Form body as the result of maturation. The result of abandonment is divided into two parts: separately representing with examples, and collectively without difference. There are three ways of representing: representing the powers with the vajra, representing fearlessness with the lion, and representing the unshared qualities with space. There are two ways of representing with power, first the individual ways of representing: the ten powers of knowing what is and is not the place, etc., from the first six powers, the middle three powers, and the last power of the ten powers, in order, eliminate the obscurations of knowledge, the obscurations of meditative absorption, and the obscurations including habitual tendencies, therefore it is similar to the vajra. Because the three obscurations exist like armor, walls, and trees, the powers sequentially penetrate, destroy, and cut them. This is what was said. The common way of representing is: firmness, essence, stability, and indivisibility. Because it possesses these four qualities of Dharma, all ten powers of the great sage, the fully enlightened Buddhas, are similar to the vajra. Then, for what reason is it firm? Because it is the essence of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana. Why is it the essence? Because it is unconditioned and spontaneously accomplished, it is stable. Why is it stable? Because it is contrary to aspects such as conceptualization and signs

English

Because everything is unconfused. Likewise, because all that should be abandoned has been destroyed, and what has been abandoned is no longer confused, the ten powers are like the actual substance of a vajra. This is how it is said. There are two aspects of fearlessness. The explanation is: Because one has no fear of anyone, and because one does not rely on others, and because the power of wisdom is extremely stable, and because one possesses excellent skill in destroying discordant elements. Thus, because the Sage Lion possesses four qualities, just as a lion possesses four qualities and is fearless among beasts, he dwells fearlessly and without timidity in the midst of an immeasurable retinue. This is how it is said. The explanation is: How does one know that one possesses four qualities in this way? Because one directly knows all knowable things without exception, one is able to prophesy all questions. Therefore, one abides without any fear of outsiders and other beings, possessing this quality. Similarly, the Shravaka Arhats who are purified by their respective obscurations, and the Bodhisattvas who abide on the ten bhumis, are also unequal to oneself, and because one observes them more excellently, one does not rely on anyone else, possessing this quality. The mind does not discriminate regarding all phenomena of suchness and extent, and abides in one-pointedness. Therefore, because it is more stable than samadhi, it possesses qualities. And because one has also well transcended the obscurations of the ground of ignorance habits that are extremely difficult to abandon, one possesses the quality of excellent skill in destroying discordant elements. This is how it is said. The representation of non-mixture is: Those who grasp at the mundane world as self, and the Hearer Noble Ones who realize the selflessness of the person, and the Solitary Buddhas who practice alone in a peaceful place, and those who grasp half of the Dharma and realize selflessness, and the wise Bodhisattvas who realize the two selflessnesses of person and phenomena, and the self-arisen perfect
