, and the Dharma nature present in the continuum of those who are taught by the noble ones, having been directly seen, whatever is to be destroyed by the wisdom of the path of meditation (སྒོ༷མ་པའི་,sgom pa'i,of meditation), that is what is to be abandoned by meditation. In particular, for the continuum of a Bodhisattva who has not reached the ultimate, whatever is to be destroyed by the wisdom of meditating on the three grounds, which are the discordant factors from the first to the seventh ground, that is what is to be abandoned based on the im(མ༷་,ma,not)pure(ད༷ག་,dag, pure) ground. For the continuum of a Bodhisattva who has reached the ultimate, whatever is to be destroyed by the diamond-like samadhi, which are the discordant factors of the three pure grounds, that is what is to be abandoned based on the pure(དག༷་,dag, pure)ground(པ༷འི་,pa'i,of)on(ས༷་,sa,ground)which(ལ༷་,la,on)to(བརྟེ༷ན་པ༷འི༷་,brten pa'i,rely). Thus, in terms of what is coarse and easy to understand, the nine(དྲི༷་མ༷་རྣ༷མ་དགུ༷་,dri ma rnam dgu, nine kinds of defilements)kinds of defilements such as desire, are represented in order by the nine(དཔེ༷་རྣམ་པ་དགུ་པོ་,dpe rnam pa dgu po,nine kinds of examples)examples of the lotus(པ༷ད་མ༷འི༷་,pad ma'i,lotus) bud(སྦུ༷བས་,sbubs, womb) and bees, etc., and are clearly shown(ར༷བ་ཏུ་བསྟ༷ན་ཏེ༷,rab tu bstan te,clearly shown). The Tathagatagarbha is obscured, obscured by the near(ཉེ༷་བ༷འི་,nye ba'i,near)affliction(ཉོ༷ན་མོ༷ངས་པའི་,nyon mongs pa'i,affliction)bud(སྦུ༷བས་ཀྱི༷ས་,sbubs kyis, womb), if distinguished by the division of substances, there are eighty-four thousand, and immeasurable(དབྱེ༷་བ༷་བྱེ༷་བ༷་མཐ༷འ་ཡས་པ་ལ༷ས་འད༷ས་པ་,dbye ba bye ba mtha' yas pa las 'das pa,immeasurable differences beyond)differences, etc., just like the immeasurable divisions of the Tathagata's wisdom. The way it obscures the sphere is: The Blessed One said that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha. What obscures this Tathagatagarbha are the nine(དྲི༷་མ༷་རྣམ་པ་དགུ༷་པོ༷་,dri ma rnam pa dgu po,nine kinds of defilements)kinds(གློ་བུར་གྱི་,glo bur gyi, temporary)of temporary defilements, the sentient beings to be obscured are the ordinary beings, as well as the Arhats of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and those who are commonly on the path of learning, and especially the wise Bodhisattvas, are all impure. In short(མདོ༷ར་བསྡུ༷ས་ན༷ས་ནི༷་,mdor bsdus nas ni,in short), as above(གོང་ལྟར་,gong ltar,as above)in order, with the lotus(པ༷ད་མ༷འི་,pad ma'i,lotus)bud(སྦུ༷བས་,sbubs, womb), etc., bees, chaff, unclean soil, etc., the nine(དཔེ༷་དགུ༷་ད༷ག་གི༷ས་,dpe dgu dag gis, nine kinds of examples)examples show the Buddha's honey essence, gold, etc. show the Dharma realm is completely pure. The first four obscurations, with the latent habits of the three poisons, with the above realm(ཁམས་གོང་མ་འདི༷་ད༷ག་གི༷ས་,khams gong ma 'di dag gis, above realm)make ordinary people impure, and their intense arising makes the ordinary people of the desire realm impure, and the Arhats.

The wise ones say that there are four kinds of impurities in order. That is, according to the order, the three poisons of the first obscuration make the ordinary beings of the upper realms impure; the intense arising of these makes the ordinary beings of the desire realm impure; the ignorance habit makes the Arhats impure; similarly, what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by meditation make the ordinary beings in the learning stage and the noble beings in the learning stage impure; the defilements based on the seven impure grounds and the defilements based on the three pure grounds make the Bodhisattvas who have not reached the other shore and those who have reached the other shore impure. Because each person mainly possesses these to-be-abandoned dharmas, it hinders the manifestation of the ultimate Dharmadhatu. That is what is said. The detailed explanation of the meaning of each example is as follows: For example, a lotus flower newly born from mud makes the viewer very happy as soon as it appears in front of them; but soon after it withers and becomes joyless. Similarly, the habit of afflictive desire is also the same, when the attachment arising from inappropriate attention manifests, it brings joy, and when it disappears later, there is no joy, so the joy of seeing a lotus is also the same. Thus, the habit of desire is like a lotus. Similarly, compare it to a bee that is attached to honey. When someone takes the honey away, its mind becomes very agitated with hatred, raises its weapon, and creates a sting. Similarly, when the habit of afflictive hatred increases and anger arises, it also creates a painful sting in the hearts of oneself and others. Thus, the habit of hatred is like a bee. For example, the essence of grains such as rice is covered by external husks and cannot be seen. Similarly, the essence of the Tathagatagarbha—the meaning of the self-luminous nature of the Dharmadhatu—is also obscured by ignorance and delusion.
