Just as some people wearing ragged clothes, possessing unpleasant appearances such as color and shape, even though residing in the womb of a child who has become the master of the land, yet because they do not recognize this, they live in a helpless house, enduring extreme suffering such as the contempt of others. Similarly, even though the protector Buddha, whose nature of mind is clear light, exists within oneself, yet because they do not recognize this, sentient beings who think they are helpless are controlled by sudden afflictions, their minds are extremely uneasy, they engage in actions with outflows, and therefore become the basis for experiencing suffering such as fear in samsara. Thus it is said. Like a golden statue in clay, the state of the Dharmadhatu for sentient beings is also like that. Explaining in detail how to purify the impurities of the Dhatu is divided into two parts: the example that illustrates it, and the meaning illustrated by it. The first part is the example: Just as the image made of molten gold in the clay, its size and characteristics are vast and beautiful, its own essence is pure and free from impurities, but when some knowledgeable people see it covered with ordinary black clay from the outside, in order to remove and purify the impurities of that beautiful inner gold, they will take various methods to remove the outer black clay and other obscurations. Thus it is said. The meaning illustrated by it is: Recognizing that the nature of mind, the Tathagatagarbha, is primordially clear and completely pure, and that the impurities of afflictions such as desire are also sudden and can be abandoned. Just like the image made of precious gold, sentient beings are like lumps of earth covered with the clay of the place of origin, in order to completely purify from the sudden impurities that obscure the vision of the Dharmadhatu, the expedient of teaching the supreme Dharma is to manifest perfect complete enlightenment.

That is to say, it is Buddha. Again, to refine and clarify: For example, using excellent gold that is inherently stainless and extremely pure, made with intensely blazing light, placed in black mud during casting, the self-nature of the image, pacifying defilements, its nature is a precious image, a wise person skilled in discernment recognizes it and gradually removes the obscuring mud and other impurities, like gently tapping with tools and other methods. Similarly, with the wisdom of the Buddha, who directly knows all knowable things, also like the image of excellent gold that is inherently pure, knowing that the dharma-nature of the mind, where afflictions are primordially pacified, the Tathagatagarbha pervades all sentient beings, and then, in accordance with their respective capacities, through the manner of teaching the Dharma, with methods like tools for removing mud, making the self-nature manifest, removing the obscuring, adventitious impurities. This is how it is done. That's what it says. To summarize, showing the beginningless principle: A lotus with an unpleasant color, and living insects; the chaff of grain and unclean mud; the earth; the bark of a tree fruit; rotten, smelly clothes; a woman's womb; and the inside of black mud, these are examples representing defilement. Like the Buddha adorned with excellent marks and signs, like honey with flavor and essence, like the essence of rice and so on, like a gold nugget that does not change, like an inexhaustible treasure, like a tree with fruit, like a beautiful precious body, like a king ruling with the wheel, like the image of excellent gold, these are examples representing essence. The examples that these closely represent are: the mind-nature of sentient beings, which is the obscuration of Suchness.

It is said that the aggregates of afflictions, because they are unrelated to nature, are sudden, but simultaneous with the Dharmadhatu, from beginningless time, they are also closely present. Wherever they exist, there is the nature of sentient beings' minds, the Tathagatagarbha, which is the wisdom born simultaneously with the beginningless purity, and has been closely present from beginningless time. So on and so forth. The combination of the commonalities of the two, defilements and essence, is twofold: the way of highlighting sudden defilements, and the way of highlighting the nature of the Dharmadhatu. There are four ways to represent defilements: the classification of obscuring defilements, the way they obscure the realm of beings, the detailed combination of individual examples and meanings, and the re-summarization of all these into a general meaning. Among them, the classification of obscuring defilements is: the sudden defilements that obscure the naturally pure Dharmadhatu, which can be summarized into nine types in terms of categories. That is, those that exist in the cause of being separated from worldly desire, the cause of immovable actions, accomplishing the form and formless realms, and can be destroyed by transcendental wisdom, are the latent tendencies of desire; the latent tendencies of hatred; the latent tendencies of ignorance, the bad situations of these, or the three seeds counted individually; those that exist in the continuum that has not been separated from desire, etc., the cause of meritorious and non-meritorious actions, accomplishing only the desire realm, which can be destroyed by the wisdom of meditation on ugliness, etc., are the strong arising of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the manifestations of the three poisons combined into one; those that exist in the continuum of Arhats, the cause of engaging in uncontaminated actions, accomplishing the mind-made body, which can be destroyed by the wisdom of great Bodhi, are covered by the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies; commonly, those that exist in the continuum of ordinary beings and learners, which can be destroyed by the wisdom of directly seeing the truth of Dharma nature, are those to be abandoned by seeing.
