In short, these nine similes explain the true meaning of the Tathagatagarbha Sutra. This passage is to connect the content to be narrated next. According to the connection method, it is shown through metaphors, including the combination of the Suchness with defilements and the common Dharma nature, and the combination of the respective Dharma natures of defilements and essence. In the common Dharma nature, it briefly explains how the Dharmadhatu pervades sentient beings, explains its metaphors and meanings in detail, and summarizes the state of beginninglessness. The brief explanation is: Just as the body of the Buddha, adorned with marks and signs, exists in lotus flowers with poor petal color and closed petals, sentient beings obscured by sudden defilements of afflictions, their Dharmadhatu is naturally pure, and the Tathagatagarbha dwells within them. Similarly, like honey rich in juice and full of nutrients, existing in the center surrounded by many bees; in the midst of husks and chaff, the essence of undamaged grains such as rice exists; in the unclean huge mud swamp, unchanging pure gold exists; under the thick soil cover, inexhaustible treasure mines exist; the potential for gradual growth, such as tree sprouts, exists in small fruits, seeds, and peels; wrapped in dirty rags, a statue of a king made of jewels exists within; similarly, in the womb or uterus of women with poor appearance and attire, the ruler, the Chakravartin king, exists; in the black mud during the time of smelting gold, a statue made of precious gold exists. Just like this, sentient beings obscured by sudden defilements of afflictions, similarly, the Buddha-nature or Dharmadhatu is naturally pure, and the Tathagatagarbha must exist within them. That is its meaning. It is explained that the naturally pure essence is defiled by sudden defilements of afflictions, just like lotus flowers, living bees, and husks.

Rotten husks, unclean dirt, piles of earth, grain bran, tattered clothes, the helpless, etc., wretched women tormented by the burning of suffering, are all similar to the nature of black mud. While the body of the Buddha and honey, the essence of grains, gold embryos, treasures of jewels, banyan trees and other trees, Buddha images made of jewels, the supreme of the wheel-turning kings who rule the four continents, precious golden statues, etc., the supreme nature that is stainless and completely pure, are the same as the Tathagatagarbha. This is its meaning. The detailed explanation of its metaphorical meaning has nine aspects: a bad lotus is a metaphor for the Buddha, a bee is a metaphor for honey, a husk is a metaphor for essence, uncleanliness is a metaphor for a gold embryo, the earth is a metaphor for a great treasure, bran is a metaphor for a sprout, tattered clothes are a metaphor for a Buddha image, a woman is a metaphor for a king, and mud is a metaphor for a golden image, thus explaining that sentient beings possess the true nature of the Dharmadhatu. For all things, it also explains in detail how to purify the defilements of space, and again to combine them well and make them clear. The former is the metaphor and the thing being metaphorized, and the meaning of the metaphor. Among them, the metaphor of a bad lotus being a metaphor for the Buddha, thus explaining that sentient beings possess the true nature of the Dharmadhatu, is: just as inside a lotus with bad-colored petals, there exists the body of the Tathagata with countless glorious marks and signs, those with clairvoyance and possessing immaculate divine eyes, having personally seen it, in order to show it to others, extract the body of the Buddha from the bud of the lotus petals. This is its meaning. The meaning of what it symbolizes is: the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata is naturally pure, and even exists in a pervasive way among sentient beings in the Avici hell, the Buddha sees with the eye of wisdom the nature of all beings, self and other, that is, the existence of the Tathagatagarbha, extremely without obscuration and until the end of samsara.

Those embodiments of great compassion who wish to benefit sentient beings from a state of equality, in order to clearly show the realm of Dharma to others, they gradually liberate those who can be tamed from the adventitious stains. That is its meaning. Explaining again: Just as those with divine clairvoyance see that the body of the Tathagata, adorned with the marks and signs of the Buddha's body, abides within those unsightly, closed lotuses, and in order to reveal that body, they will surely cut and remove the bracts of the petals that serve as the means of manifestation, so too, they see that the essence of the perfectly enlightened Buddha—the realm of Dharma—is obscured by the infinite bracts of adventitious defilements such as desire and hatred, and exists within all beings. For those who have not realized this, with immeasurable compassion, like those with the ability to remove the lotus petals that serve as the means of manifesting the body, they engage in activities in order to surely destroy the obscurations of sentient beings—the adventitious defilements of afflictions. That is its meaning. Just as honey is to bees, so it is with the way the realm of Dharma abides in sentient beings. For example: Just as honey, which is surrounded and protected by a swarm of living beings—bees—and is endowed with perfect flavor, is seen by those who are skilled at discerning honey and who seek honey as their goal, to exist in the center covered by bees, and then through various methods such as emitting smoke, the honey is completely separated from the living beings—the swarm of bees—thereby obtaining the honey. That is its meaning. Its meaning is: The great sage, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, directly knows all knowable things with the eye of the Buddha, seeing that the wisdom similar to the honey of the self-nature wisdom of the Tathagatagarbha, which can be known by each individual, pervades everything, and then in order to remove the obscuration of that realm of Dharma—the adventitious defilements similar to bees—together with the seeds
