Then, establishing the Dharma as witness, he questioned them, causing the heretics to retreat many times. There, I felt exhausted being alone, and the heretics retreated. There, I thought to myself, if I cannot even accomplish my own affairs, how can I accomplish the affairs of others? So I threw stone dust into the sky, vowing that if it fell to the ground, I would abandon bodhicitta. At that moment, the noble Manjushri himself appeared and said: Do not generate the mind of the lesser vehicle! Until you attain perfect enlightenment, I will take care of you. Write that treatise well! Heretics cannot harm it. Write the future rituals well! Heretics cannot harm it. In the future, all treatises will regard this as one eye. After prophesying in this way, he composed the Compendium on Valid Cognition, and so forth. He told the limitless, wondrous biographies to Ishvarasena. He told it to the crown jewel of all logicians, the glorious Dharmakirti (lower part, 828). He was born as the son of the Brahmin caste heretic Parivrajaka Rogananda, not long after King Simha V and King Srimat and others had turned the wheel of royal power. From a young age, he studied crafts, medicine, grammar, and so on, and became proficient in all the tenets of the heretics, becoming a scholar. At a time when the Brahmins were especially praising him, he saw some Buddhist scriptures and turned away from his own teacher, developing great faith in Buddhism and transforming into the guise of a Buddhist layman. Therefore, he was expelled from the Brahmins' place. After that, he went to the central country, thinking, "I will make the heretics' teachings just a name." He asked who was skilled in Buddhist logic, and they said that Dignaga was skilled. He asked where he was, and they said he had passed away. He asked who knew his system, and they said that Ishvarasena knew it at the Kutala monastery in the central country. He went there and listened to the Compendium once, and thought that the heretics' tenets were reasonable. After listening twice, he thought that some Buddhism was reasonable and some heretics were reasonable. After listening three times, he realized that all the tenets of the Carvakas were just wrong views. He also found that Ishvarasena held that the nature of the sign had six modes, and that the sign did not pervade the dissimilar class.

Because it was said, "To assume that inverse pervasion is established merely by seeing, etc., is not the view of the teacher Dharmakīrti," you are like the teacher Dharmakīrti, refuting all erroneous sects (lower letter, p. 829), and the teacher also granted you the commentary on the *Compendium on Valid Cognition*. Then, having relied on the mantra teacher Ḍiṃgi, he received empowerment and practiced, and thus, the face of Heruka was revealed, and all siddhis were accomplished. After that, wanting to learn the secret words of the heretical tenets, he disguised himself as a beggar and went to the southern region. When asked who was skilled in the heretical tenets, they said that the youth Rolpa was skilled. There, the youth Rolpa had obtained great wealth, possessing abundant rice fields, bulls and cows, buffaloes, and five hundred male and female slaves. The teacher also had him alone accomplish all internal and external affairs. The youth Rolpa and his wife were delighted. When asked what he wanted, he said he wanted to hear the tenets, so he showed him the various doctrines and learned some secret words, which he did not show to anyone other than his son and wife, and he was satisfied with his work. There, the Brahmin, greedy for wealth, thought that if he did not give a reward, there would be a fault. He gave a bull with five hundred silver paṇas, and also took gold from another yaksha residing in that area, and gave the gold to the youth Rolpa, and feasted the Brahmins with the silver. That very night, he fled and went to a large market called Kāka Kuha, where there was a palace, and there was a king named Druma Ri, where he posted a notice saying who wanted to debate. The Brahmin Kana Gubha, and about five hundred other holders of tenets from six other views (lower letter, p. 830) debated with him for three months, and all were defeated, and he brought them into the Buddhist teachings. There, the youth Rolpa heard about this and became very angry, and came with his Brahmin entourage, and, establishing the teachings as witness, debated, and all five hundred of the youth Rolpa's unique vows were refuted with a hundred kinds of reasoning, etc. Because there are endless biographies, he wanted to find a patron for writing the *Seven Treatises on Valid Cognition*.
