These two treatises are like the root of all grammar treatises. Also, shortly after the Third Council, there arose a king named Candana Raksha. At that time, a Brahmin named Indra (it is said that a friend of this king, having attained accomplishment through the practice of the lord of gods, inquired about the definitive points of grammar, and what he said was written down, becoming known as the Indra-vyakarana. It contains twenty-five thousand shlokas. This is called the grammar taught by the gods. Also, around the time of Master Nagarjuna, in order for King Sukhavati to learn grammar, the Brahmin Vararuci, through the power of mantra, summoned the Naga King Shesha, who explained Panini's treatise in one hundred thousand shlokas, with a curtain separating the master and the Naga (lower part 816). The Naga spoke, and Vararuci wrote it down. Once, wondering what the Naga's body was like, he lifted the curtain and saw a huge serpent coiled up. The Naga, ashamed, fled. There, only twenty-five thousand shlokas of the commentary were completed, so the remainder was composed by Vararuci himself, to the extent of twelve thousand shlokas, which is known as the Mahabhashya. This is called the grammar taught by the Naga. That master Brahmin Vararuci was a person of great faith in the Buddha's teachings, proficient in the six duties of a Brahmin, and became a close friend of Nagarjuna, born in the eastern land of Rara. He practiced Avalokiteshvara for twelve years, and finally attained accomplishment, with Avalokiteshvara appearing in person and asking him what he desired. He said: I will benefit sentient beings with the eight great siddhis. From then on, all mantras were accomplished as he wished, and he knew all knowledge without having studied it. After that, he went to the western country and stayed in the land of a king named Sindhu-vahana. There, he also benefited many sentient beings through the combination of mantra and tantra. After that, he came to Varanasi and became the object of offering for King Bhima Shakala. There, the king gave his daughter, named Spring Blossom, who was skilled in the Vedas, to the Brahmin Vararuci. Spring Blossom, arrogant and conceited, said that she was more intelligent than Vararuci, so she would not be his servant. Vararuci said: Then, my teacher is wise.

The Great Black One (lower part, p. 817) said, "I have a method that increases wisdom a hundredfold, please teach it to me." Then the king bestowed Spring Prosperity. So, in Magadha, there was a cowherd who was handsome and beautiful, but very foolish. After bathing and anointing him for several days, he was dressed as a Brahmin Pandit. He was taught only one mantra: Om Sati When the king and the assembly of people were seated, he scattered flowers on the king and said, "Say this, Om Sati (藏文:ༀ་སཱ་སྟི་,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:). No matter what anyone asks, do not answer." After being taught this, he followed the instructions. But he stammered, and the king explained the meaning of those four letters: Umaya Pahito Rudra (藏文:ཨུ་མ་ཡ་པ་ཧི་ཏོ་རུ་ཏྲ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:), Shakara Pahito Vishnu (藏文:ཤ་ཀ་ར་པ་ཧི་ཏོ་བི་ཥྞུ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:), Tankara Ulapanishcha (藏文:ཊཾ་ཀ་ར་ཨུ་ལ་པཱ་ཎིཥྩ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:), Rakshantu Shiva Sarvada (藏文:རཀྵནྟུ་ཤི་བ་སརྦཱ་དཱ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:). The meaning is to say auspicious words, and then change the subject. That phrase in Tibetan is: Uma is with the fierce one, happiness is with liberation, the method of Tanka, holding a short spear in hand, may the peaceful one always protect. Then, Spring Prosperity asked some questions about the meaning of sounds, but he couldn't say anything. Chokse said, "How could my teacher, a great scholar, answer a woman's questions?" Thus, he confused him. Then, the Brahmin Chokse fled to the assembly of gods. There, the cowherd was taken to various temples, but he said nothing. Then, in the outer corridor of the temple, there were paintings of various animals. When he saw the image of a bull (lower part, p. 818), he was delighted and made gestures of tending livestock. People thought, "Alas, this must be a cowherd, and we know we have been deceived." Then, the Brahmin Chokse also showed many fields of knowledge, such as sounds, in different places, and finally, grasping the shoulder of the Great Black One, he went to a place on the summit of Mount Meru where trees converge. It is said that the cowherd also became a jewel on the crown of poetry masters, that is, a slave of the Black Pandit. See other histories for details. There, the aforementioned King Deje was very impressed with the sound and explanation made by the teacher Brahmin Chokse. The Brahmin Sabhawarma's face was like a young man's.
