Having heard this, he became a great Madhyamika who upheld the tradition of the Well-Established. His disciple, the sun of the snowy land's teachings, Acharya Bodhi (藏文:ཨཱཙཔོརྱ་བོ་དྷ་ཧྭ་), was born in the eastern region of Bengal, a descendant of the king of Saho. He took ordination and full monastic vows from Khenpo Yeshe Nyingpo. His name (Vol. 1, p. 559) was widely known as Shantarakshita, meaning 'Peaceful Protector.' He was also called Dharma Shita Ghosha, meaning 'Dharma Peaceful Sound.' He mastered all the teachings of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, and in particular, became a great Madhyamika who held the lineage of the higher self-continuum. He also composed treatises such as the Ornament of the Middle Way, and upheld the teachings in India for a long time. Then, when the emanation king Trisong Detsen desired to establish the Buddha's teachings in Tibet (c. 742-797 CE), he appointed Ba Salnang as the chamberlain of Mangyul. Ba Salnang went to Nepal to meet Khenpo Shantarakshita and requested him to generate the mind of enlightenment. He then returned to Tibet and reported to the Tsenpo, who said, 'For the time being, do not tell others, and when the time comes, I will invite him.' After that, Salnang returned to Mangyul. There, a messenger came, and Salnang invited the Khenpo, who stayed in the palace of Lungtsuk and taught the Dharma. However, due to the disturbances of gods and demons, it was not possible to build a monastery or practice the Dharma. So the Khenpo went to Nepal again. Then, the Tsenpo invited the Khenpo and also the master Padmasambhava. The master subdued all the evil Tibetan demons and bound them by oath, so that the Dharma could be practiced freely. The construction of Samye Monastery was also completed successfully in five years, etc., as mentioned in detail above. In the year of the Sheep, Acharya Bodhisattva (藏文:ཨཱཙརྱ་བོ་དྷི་ས་ཧྭ་) served as Khenpo, and Ba Pelyang and the Seven Tested Men (Vol. 1, p. 560) took ordination and full monastic vows. After that, many faithful and wise people also took ordination, thus establishing the Sangha and the Vinaya, and making them flourish and develop. His disciple Ba Ratna is said to be from the Yarlung region. A member of the Ba clan, Ang Acharya Bodhisattva and others studied many teachings, and he was a minister with perfect faith and wisdom. One day, the Tsenpo said, 'There are no monks in my Tibet, can my ministers become monks?' The Khenpo replied, 'Yes, they can.'

He said not to be negligent. On the eighth day of the first month of spring in the Year of the Sheep, Acharya Shantarakshita acted as the Khenpo (abbot), and Danashila and Jinamitra acted as the Karma Acharya (ordainer) and secret preceptor, respectively. Ten Panditas completed the quorum. Rba Khri gzigs, who had great faith among the Tibetans, was ordained and immediately after completing the Upasampada (full ordination), possessed the five Abhijñās (supernatural knowledges), the Tsenpo (king) was delighted. He took his feet on his head and said, "You are the Ratna (jewel) of Tibet!" Thus, he was given the decree, and he became known as Rba Ratna. It is said that his real name was Dpal dbyangs, according to the Great Rba Genealogy. He was the earliest ordained monk in Tibet. The Tsenpo further requested, "Please ordain more people." He replied, "I will do it tomorrow." Then Rba Gsal snang and Sba Gor he 'dod's son and others were ordained, and it is said that they were given the names Yeshe Nyingpo and Vairochana Rakshita, etc. Thereafter, Rba Ratna became a great Sthavira Tripitaka Master. During the great Pratīharya (miracle) festival at Samye Monastery, he acted as the Khenpo for about three hundred faithful people who were ordained (Stod cha, p. 561). In the end, he performed many amazing signs, such as extracting relics from the eyes of the Jowo Yizhin Khorlo Gyurwai statue, and then passed away. His disciples were known as the root of the Later Propagation of the Dharma - the Mar, Gyo, and Tsang lineages, and he was the accomplished one himself. Gyel mi Gtsang rab gsal of Jed, Gyo ge 'byung of Bodongpa, and Mar Shakya Muni of Stodlungpa were ordained by Rba Ratna and received the Upasampada ordination. They studied the scriptures from Jinamitra, Danashila, Chogdrub, and their own Khenpo, etc., and became great Bhikshu Tripitaka Masters. While meditating in the meditation center of Pal Chuwo Ri Monastery, in the Iron Bird year, when Tri Darma U Dumtsen destroyed the Dharma, they carried the Vinaya and Abhidharma texts such as the Karma Shatam, and first fled to the upper regions. Fearing the king's law, they hid during the day and traveled at night, eventually reaching Ngari. Unable to stay there, they left Garlog and fled through the upper northern regions to the Hor region. Relying on the Hor Upasaka Sakya Sherab, they stayed there, thinking that they must propagate the Dharma. Although they tried, they were unable to propagate it, so they returned from the Beri Tsa Tsho of Domé Lho'ö.
