After sending them off, Gesar Nang built two temples there and also set up fences and decorations. He went to Nepal to meet Khenpo Zhiwa-tsho, requested ordination and made vows, and pleaded with him to come to Tibet. Zhiwa-tsho said, "Tibet is my field for taming, but because the Tsenpo and you had not yet been born, I have been waiting here for nine generations of Tibetan kings. Now that you two have also grown up, the time has come for us to establish the Dharma in Tibet." Not long after, the prince grew up and, after examining the documents of his ancestors, because he was determined to promote the Dharma, Sangshi learned of the time of the prophecy previously made by Hashang (Upper Volume, p. 226), and took out the scriptures from the mound. The *Sutra of the Ten Virtuous Actions*, the *Diamond Sutra*, and the *Salu Ljampa* were presented to him for reading, and he understood that these scriptures were in accordance with the Dharma and were interconnected, so he developed faith. The ministers who believed in the Dharma sent Sangshi to the upper regions. After that, Gesar Nang went to Bodh Gaya to make offerings to the Maha Bodhi. After returning to U (present-day Lhasa area), he reported the words of the Khenpo to the Tsenpo. The Tsenpo said, "Ma Zhang may punish you, so you should leave quickly. I will secretly discuss with Enlan Daza and find a way to invite him." There, the great minister Ma Zhang Trompa-kye had great power and could not promote the Dharma. When he arranged everything according to the Bon religion and took control of the government, the king felt unhappy. He asked the great minister Enlan for a way to place all of Tibet under the sacred Dharma. Enlan replied, "This is very good. To eliminate the king's misfortune, it would be beneficial to have the two great ministers imprisoned for three years." So, he had this decision announced. At that time, people requested to do so and bribed the diviners to announce it as well. When this news spread throughout the country, the king gathered all the ministers and attendants and asked, "Who can take my place in suffering?" The old man Enlan stood up and said, "I am willing to go." Ma Zhang also competed and stood up, saying, "I am also willing to go." After that, a prison was built in Luntong Trung (present-day Dongga Town, Doilungdeqing District, Lhasa) in the upper region, and the supplies for three years and the two great ministers were locked inside. The giant attendant Lode Gula-gyal (Upper Volume, p. 227) said to the old man Enlan, "Come out!" When the door of the prison was blocked by a huge wooden plank, Enlan

Having put on the shoes of a vulture and worn a hide, rolling on the stones, after coming out like drilling a hole, Ma Zhang also followed. Clapping his hands and saying "Pha na," he urged him on. When he came out of the hole, Ma Zhang grabbed him, only getting a handful of vulture feathers and then he left. After that, they closed the door, didn't leave anyone to guard the tomb, and came back. Using the excuse of grazing black horses in the desolate wilderness north of Gyatsa Lhasang, he drove him away. After Sba Gyal Tori Zunlhak Kyed died, there wasn't a single minister who didn't like the Dharma. When the king gathered many subjects, he said: "My ancestors practiced the Dharma, but Ma Zhang destroyed it, which is very bad. Let's invite the Buddha Shakyamuni from China again. We ourselves can also practice the Dharma, so let's practice the Dharma." Everyone agreed to practice the Dharma. After that, he sent messengers to invite Salnang Pandita. Then Gos said to the king: "The Tibetan subjects have little faith in the Dharma, so if we build a temple from the beginning, they won't be happy, so we need to find a way." When everyone gathered, we should follow the example of our ancestors who created vast territories in the past. Should we build a crystal palace with a thousand roofs on top of Shangri Migyur Rinpoche, facing east so that we can see China? Or should we wrap Haspo Mountain in copper? Or should we fill the Walung Valley with gold dust? Or should we dig a well of nine hundred ninety-nine toms (measurement unit) in the plain of Kachuu? Or should we build just the foundation of a temple? Ask them what they want to do." At the beginning of the new year, in the auspicious month, when everyone gathered, the king said this. Everyone remained silent without answering, so Gos stood up and said: "King, no one can build a crystal palace on Shangri Mountain that can see China. Even if they could, it wouldn't be necessary. Even if the Tibetan bowls and kettles were turned into copper, they wouldn't be enough to cover Haspo Mountain. The Walung Valley can't even be filled with sand from the riverbank, so how can it be filled with gold dust? If we dig a well one tom deep in the plain of Kachuu, it will be filled with water and there will be no place to dig, so how can we dig nine hundred ninety-nine toms? It would be better to build just the foundation of a temple, so that we can be happy in both this life and the next, and ultimately
