Second, the act of passing into Nirvana: Generally, the Bhagavan abides in the state of having conquered the four maras for immeasurable kalpas, so there is no need to pass into Nirvana. However, in order to reverse the clinging to permanence of those who are to be tamed, and in order to fully ripen many sentient beings in this way, he shows the act of passing into Nirvana. (Upper Volume, p. 66) Then, the Tathagata entrusted the Buddha's teachings, together with the fourfold assembly, to the great Kashyapa, who would uphold the teachings. After that, he went to the city of Kushinagar, to the land of the Mallas, and in the manner of a pair of sala trees, he closely set his mind on passing into Nirvana. At this time, the Bhagavan himself subdued the last disciples to be tamed, the Gandharva king Rabga and the wandering ascetic Rabzang. Then, Ananda asked, "How should we treat the body of the Tathagata?" He said, "Treat it as you would treat the body of a Chakravartin king." Monks, ask if you have any doubts, look at the body of the Tathagata! It is difficult to see a Tathagata, like the Udumbara flower. Monks, be silent! Thus, all compounded things are of the nature of decay, this was the last teaching he gave. In that place, he lay down on his right side on a throne of seven layers, in the posture of a lion. Then, he entered into the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the cessation, equally in the forward and reverse order. Again, he remained in the four dhyanas and passed into ultimate Nirvana. Thus, the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata always remains, but by showing the manner of passing into Nirvana with a body that liberates through skillful means, he tames even those who have not been tamed (Upper Volume, p. 67), and with ten purposes in mind, such as constantly showing, urging renunciation, and uniting with the Dharmakaya, he showed the manner of passing into Nirvana at midnight in the last month of spring (Tibetan second month). Immediately after that, signs such as the earth shaking caused the three thousand great thousand world realms to be disturbed. At the same time as the Bhagavan passed completely into Nirvana, hundreds of thousands of Arhats also passed into Nirvana. Then, Ananda and the Mallas of Kushinagar carried the body of the Buddha for seven days.

Having brought it to the front of the stupa adorned with a crest jewel, the body was covered with cotton and five hundred pairs of double cloths, placed in an iron box, filled with oil, and covered. They attempted to cremate it with fragrant firewood, but the fire did not ignite. At that time, the great elder Kashyapa arrived from Rajagriha with five hundred attendants, opened the box, carefully cleared away the cloths and cotton, and paid homage to the undamaged body. Then, when it was placed as before, the fire ignited on its own and cremation began. Afterwards, when the box was opened and examined, the remains had turned into a heap of relics like mustard seeds, and the outer and inner cloths remained unburnt. The giants carried these to the center of the city. After seven days had passed, the kings of the directions, in order to receive a share of the relics of the body (Upper Section, p. 68), divided their armies into four parts and went to Kushinagar, saying, 'Give us a share of the relics, or we will seize them by force.' The giants of Kushinagar also said, 'So be it.' When enmity arose because they would not give the relics, at that time, there was a Brahmin named Brevo and Manyama, who was virtuous, firm in speech, virtuous and powerful, and of great wisdom. He said, 'Wise ones, listen! The Bhagavan has long been endowed with patience and praises patience, so it is not fitting to quarrel over his relics. I will divide the relics into eight parts; give me the container.' Having spoken thus, the enmity of all subsided, their minds became one, and all agreed. Then, in order for the kings of the directions to build stupas for the relics in their respective places, that Brahmin divided the relics into eight parts and gave them separately. The first share of the relics was given to the giants of Kushinagar. The second was given to the giants of the land of Sin. The third was given to the great Shakya king Buluka of the land of Shifting Understanding. The fourth was given to the Shakya king Krotapya of the city of Sound (Kapilavastu). The fifth was given to the Brahmin of the continent of Abhijit. The sixth was given to the Shakya race of Ser
