Possessing great compassion, endowed with inconceivable power and activity. The sole refuge of all of samsara and nirvana, the unparalleled Shakya King, the Accomplisher of All Purposes. From beginningless time, for all sentient beings suffering in the immense and unfathomable ocean of samsara (Vol. 1, p. 27), he has held them with great compassion. Starting from generating the supreme bodhicitta, according to the Lesser Vehicle, he accumulated vast collections of merit and wisdom for three countless eons, and according to the Great Vehicle, for thirty-two eons. In this Fortunate Aeon, adorned by a thousand Sugata lamps of Dharma, he manifested the attainment of perfect enlightenment. All these inconceivable deeds are fully known only by the Tathagata, far beyond the comprehension of others. Nevertheless, for those disciples who delight in following this omniscient teacher, the main deeds are summarized into twelve categories and taught, thereby establishing limitless beings in temporary and ultimate benefit and unsurpassed bliss. Regarding this, the Protector Maitreya says in the Mahayana treatise *Uttaratantra*: 'Manifesting birth, descending from Tushita, entering the womb and being born, mastering crafts, delighting in the retinue of consorts, renunciation and asceticism, going to the Bodhi tree, subduing the Maras and perfection, the wheel of Dharma of perfect enlightenment, and manifesting passing into nirvana.' (Vol. 1, p. 28) In pure and impure realms, he shows existence as long as samsara lasts. Now, in accordance with the order of this text, I will speak briefly. First is the deed of descending from Tushita. It is said that our teacher, the nature of immeasurable compassion, was born in Tushita as the holy son White Banner.

E! When (He) was teaching the Dharma and abiding among the immeasurable host of gods, knowing that the time had come to tame the beings of Jambudvipa, He observed with the five observations, namely, observing the place, lineage, time, mother, and family. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra, "Bodhisattvas are not born in the Eastern Continent of Superior Bodies, nor in the Western Continent of Cow Usage, nor in the Northern Continent of Unpleasant Sound, but only in the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa." Furthermore, (the Buddhas) thought that the beings of Jambudvipa could not go to Tushita Heaven to listen to the Dharma, but the gods could descend there, so they observed Jambudvipa. Likewise, (He) observed the royal lineage revered by many lineages, being free from the two extremes (of time), the Illusion Goddess who had prayed for many lifetimes to become the mother of a Buddha, and the lineage or family within the seven Shakya clans without fault. At that time, the Bodhisattva proclaimed, "I will transmigrate from this race of gods in Tushita Heaven and become the son of King Shuddhodana, and realize the nectar." Having said this, He placed His own crown on the head of the Invincible One and appointed him as regent. Then, when the time came, He manifested the manner of passing away. Although the gods offered various wishes of their own, the Brahmanical Treatise says, "The holy elephant, great in body and supreme, with six tusks, covered with golden ornaments, its head red like Rahu, extremely beautiful, its cheeks full like rocks, possessing a beautiful form." It is said that the glorious and irreversible son of the gods, according to (their) request, emanated and passed away. Second, the deed of entering the womb: Then, on the fifteenth day of the Saga month, when the constellation fell upon the King (star), the Great Illusion Goddess also took the pure vows of the Sustained Abiding and remained in (the vows). The Bodhisattva also, at midnight, in the form of a holy elephant calf as white as snow, silver, and kumuda, entered the womb from the right side of the mother. At that time, this great earth shook in six ways, and all the realms of the world were filled with light. The Illusion Goddess also dreamed that a great elephant king entered her body from the right side. From that time until (birth)

During the sleep, the mother abided in the five places of learning and did not indulge in desires. Due to the Bodhisattva residing in the mother's womb, King Śuddhodana also abided in fasting and abandoned the affairs of the king, constantly practicing the Dharma. The country was peaceful, the year was good, there were no wars or enemies, and everything was filled with joy. The third is the act of birth: Thus, after the mother had been in the womb for ten months, the goddesses manifested that the time for the Bodhisattva to be born had come, and so they informed the king of the reason. The king also, according to the mother's wishes, decorated the surroundings of the Lumbini Garden with pleasing sights. The goddess Māyā entered a decorated chariot adorned with countless strings of jewels and many priceless divine garments and proceeded to the Lumbini Garden. At that time, the Four Great Kings, Brahma, Indra, and others also followed closely, and sixty thousand Śākya women and the Śākya assembly with its four divisions also surrounded her, and the songs and music of gods, nāgas, and humans filled the air. In that sacred forest, she saw a tree called Śāla, which the mothers of past Buddhas had also relied upon, adorned with leaves, flowers, and fruits. The mother grasped a branch of it with her right hand and stayed for a moment, and from her right side was born the Bodhisattva, who was a mass of light and rays, with a great vision filling all the boundless reaches of the ten directions, just as experiencing the wonders of a goddess in a dream, and the mother was born without any harm. At that moment, at the moment of birth, the gods Brahma and Indra tried to catch him with a flawless cloth of Kāśika, but they could not hold him. Then, as soon as he landed on the ground, the earth goddess offered a fully bloomed lotus as a seat. The dragon kings Nanda and Upananda poured streams of cool and warm water from the sky to bathe him. Thus, as soon as he was born, this great earth
