Because they speak knowingly, not unknowingly. Do not say, 'Whatever this monk likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate.' Why? Because, venerable ones, this monk is not speaking the Dharma, not speaking the Vinaya. Venerable ones, this monk speaks what is not Dharma, speaks what is not Vinaya. This monk wrongly accepts and clings to what is not Dharma and not Vinaya, and subsequently names it. Because this monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Venerable ones, do not like and tolerate what this monk likes and tolerates. Venerable ones, do not wish to divide the Sangha, but wish for the Sangha to be in harmony. 2-1177 Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Sangha, do not divide the Sangha. Be universally joyful, do not quarrel. Be like water and milk mixed together, with one peak, one voice. If you clarify the Teacher's teachings, you will abide in happiness. Venerable ones, admonish those who follow the division of the Sangha and speak discordantly, saying, 'Abandon this behavior.' When the monks admonish those monks in this way, if they abandon that behavior, that is good. If they do not abandon it, they should be admonished two or three times to abandon that behavior, and they should be properly taught. When admonished and taught two or three times, if they abandon that behavior, that is good. If they do not abandon it, it is a Sanghavasesa offense. If many monks live near a village or town, and they are destroyers of families, engaging in evil practices. If they are seen, heard, or fully known to be destroying families, seen, heard, or fully known to be engaging in evil practices, then the monks should say to those monks: 2-1178 'Venerable ones, you are destroyers of families, engaging in evil practices. You are seen, heard, and fully known to be destroying families, and you are also seen, heard, and fully known to be engaging in evil practices. Venerable ones, is it enough for you to stay here? Depart from this place.' If they say to the monks, 'Venerable ones, some monks leave here because of desire.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, some monks act out of desire, act out of hatred, act out of delusion, and act out of fear. Just because of similar downfalls, some monks are expelled, and some are not expelled. If they say this, the monks should say to those monks: 'Venerable ones, do not say that.' Venerable ones, here some monks act out of desire, act out of hatred, act out of delusion, and act out of fear. Just because of similar downfalls, some monks are expelled, and some are not expelled. Do not say that. Why? Because those monks do not act out of desire, do not act out of hatred, do not act out of delusion, and do not act out of fear. But because the venerable ones themselves are of bad conduct, practicing evil things. You yourselves have seen, heard, and fully understood that they are of bad conduct, and you have also seen, heard, and fully understood that they are practicing evil things. Therefore, venerable ones, abandon such speech as 'acting out of desire,' 'acting out of hatred,' 'acting out of delusion,' and 'acting out of fear.' They should be admonished in this way. When the monks admonish those monks in this way, if they give up that behavior, that is good. If they do not give it up, they should be admonished and taught two or three times in order to give up that behavior. If they give up that behavior after being admonished and taught two or three times, that is good. If they do not give it up, it is a Sanghavasesa. Furthermore, here some monks become naturally difficult to please, and when the monks speak to them in accordance with the Dharma and the Vinaya, with the teachings that belong to the recitation and the sutras of the Sugata, they say: 'Venerable ones, whether it is good or bad, do not speak to me. I also, whether it is good or bad, will not speak to the venerable ones. Venerable ones, let go of the path of speech to me. What is the use of me speaking to you?' They avoid being spoken to. The monks should say this: 'Venerable one, the monks speak to you in accordance with the Dharma and the Vinaya, with the teachings that belong to the recitation and the sutras of the Sugata. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
