Venerable ones, we shall now perform the Uposatha and recite the Pratimoksha Sutra. Whoever among you has transgressions should confess them. If there are no transgressions, one should remain silent. If you remain silent, I shall understand that the venerable ones are pure. Just as a monk answers after being questioned individually, so too, for such a community of monks, it should be proclaimed up to three times. Furthermore, if any monk, when such a community of monks is proclaimed to him up to three times, knowingly has transgressions but does not confess them, then he knowingly speaks a lie. Venerable ones, the Blessed One has said that knowingly speaking a lie is an obstructive dharma. Therefore, any monk who desires to be purified of transgressions should confess the transgressions he remembers and sees. If he confesses, he will abide touching happiness; if he does not confess, he will not. Venerable ones, I have finished reciting the introduction to the Pratimoksha Sutra. Now I shall ask the venerable ones: 'Are you pure in this?' I shall ask 'Are you pure in this?' two or three times. If the venerable ones are pure in this, then by remaining silent, it is understood as such. The four Parajika Dharmas: Verse: Unchaste conduct and stealing, Not killing others, Lying and so on, These four dharmas are spoken of here. Venerable ones, these four Parajika Dharmas are recited every half-month during the recitation of the Pratimoksha Sutra. Furthermore, if any monk, who together with other monks observes the same precepts, without having renounced the precepts, without having violated the precepts, engages in unchaste conduct, that is, engages in sexual activity, even with an animal, that monk is defeated and should not reside [with the Sangha]. Furthermore, if any monk, dwelling in a village or monastery, takes what is not given, which is considered stealing, to the extent that if he took what was not given, the king or a great minister would seize him and say to him: 'O man, you are a thief, a child, a fool, a stealer!' and would kill him, imprison him, or banish him, if that monk takes what is not given, that monk is also defeated and should not reside [with the Sangha]. Furthermore, if any monk intentionally kills a human being or a being born as a human being, or causes an abortion --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Was he killed? Was a weapon given to him? Was a weapon given to him to kill with? Was he encouraged to die? Were praises of death spoken to him? Was it said to him: 'Alas, what is the use of this sinful, impure, evil life of yours? Alas, it is better for you to die than to live.' Was he encouraged to die by various kinds of desires and thoughts? Were praises of death spoken to him? If that person dies because of that instigation, then that Bhikkhu (Buddhist monk) has committed a Saṃghāvaśeṣa (a type of offense in Buddhist monastic rules requiring a meeting of the Saṃgha for absolution) and should not continue to reside there. Furthermore, if any Bhikkhu, without fully knowing or understanding, claims to have attained the highest human achievement, the state of an Arya (noble one), a special attainment, knowledge, vision, or experience, while not having attained them, and then, wishing to purify himself from that transgression, says at another time, whether asked or not, 'Venerable ones, I said I knew, but I did not know. I said I saw, but I did not see,' admitting that he spoke falsely and deceptively. If it is not due to arrogance, then that Bhikkhu has also committed a Saṃghāvaśeṣa and should not continue to reside there. Venerable ones, I have recited the four Saṃghāvaśeṣa offenses. If a Bhikkhu commits any of these offenses, then from the beginning as in the end, he has committed a Saṃghāvaśeṣa and should not continue to reside with the Bhikkhus or partake in offerings. I will ask you, venerable ones: 'Are you pure in this?' I will ask two or three times: 'Are you pure in this?' If the venerable ones are pure in this, then by remaining silent, it is understood that you are pure. Summary of the thirteen Saṃghāvaśeṣa rules: Emission of semen, sexual contact, enticement, seeking offerings, building a hut, urging others to build, unfounded accusations, minor disputes, division of the Saṃgha, attachment to evil companions, ruining families, and being disobedient. Venerable ones, these thirteen Saṃghāvaśeṣa rules are recited every half-month during the recitation of the Prātimokṣa (code of monastic discipline). Intentional emission of semen, except in a dream, is a Saṃghāvaśeṣa. Furthermore, if any Bhikkhu, with a mind controlled by desire, engages in physical contact with a woman, whether by grasping her hand, her arm, her hair, or touching any of her limbs, it is a Saṃghāvaśeṣa.
