If someone does not act according to the Dharma, does not abandon sinful views, and speaks with others, saying that he has arrived, abides, enjoys, and even sleeps in the same room with that person, then he commits a transgression. If a novice says this: 'Those desires that the Blessed One said are obstacles, even if one practices those desires, they will not become obstacles, I know that the Blessed One taught in this way.' The monks should say to that novice: 'Novice, how can you say that those desires that the Blessed One said are obstacles, even if one practices those desires, they will not become obstacles, I know that the Blessed One taught in this way? Do not say that, do not slander the Blessed One! Slandering the Blessed One is not good.' The Blessed One would not say that. Venerable, novice, those things that obstruct desires are indeed obstacles.' The Blessed One has said in many ways that if one practices those desires, they will become obstacles. Novice, you should abandon this sinful view.' The monks should admonish that novice in this way. When the monks admonish that novice in this way, if he abandons that view, then that is good. If he does not abandon it, he should be admonished and taught again and again in order to make him abandon that view. If he is admonished and taught again and again, and he abandons that view, then that is good. If he does not abandon it, the monks should say to that novice: 'From now on, novice, do not say that the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One is your teacher, nor should you follow any Brahmachari, wise person, or guru. You are also no longer allowed to stay in the same place with the monks and novices for two nights, foolish person, leave here, go away!' If a monk knowingly associates with, relies on, or sleeps in the same room with such an expelled novice, he commits a transgression. If a monk obtains a new robe, he should dye it one of three colors: blue, red, or saffron. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

should be colored. If a bhikshu uses a new garment without coloring it in any of the three colors—blue, red, or ochre—he commits a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu takes with his own hand or causes to be taken any jewel or what is considered a jewel, unless it is in a sangha's monastery or dwelling, he commits a downfall. If a bhikshu is in a sangha's monastery or dwelling and sees a jewel or what is considered a jewel, thinking, 'Whose is this? I should take it,' then it should be taken with such a mind, and that is the proper way. The Blessed One said to bathe every half month, and if one bathes at a time other than that, he commits a downfall. The times are: the latter half of the Soga month and the first three and a half months of summer are the hot times. The rest are the times of sickness, the times of work, the times of travel, the times of wind, the times of rain, the times of drizzle; these are the times. Summary: livestock, regret, finger, play, together hating, hiding, without a mat, without a basis, a journey without a man. Furthermore, if any bhikshu knowingly kills a being belonging to the livestock class, he commits a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu knowingly thinks, 'By any means, may this bhikshu not experience happiness even for a moment,' and based on that, causes a bhikshu to feel regret, he commits a downfall. To make love with fingers is a downfall. To play in the water is a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu sleeps in the same place with a woman, he commits a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu hates a bhikshu, or causes hatred, even if it is just to make a joke, he commits a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu hides or causes to be hidden the bowl, robe, mat, bowl, belt, or any of the living utensils of a bhikshu, bhikshuni, shramanerika, shramana, or shramanerika, unless there is a special reason, he commits a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu gives a garment to a bhikshu and uses it without a mat underneath, he commits a downfall. Furthermore, if any bhikshu, being angry and hateful, groundlessly accuses a pure and innocent bhikshu of a sanghavasesa offense, he commits a downfall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
