If it were that just as it burns the self of others, it would also burn its own self, but it is not so, then it is not right to say that fire also illuminates the self of others. Furthermore, if according to your words, fire illuminates both self and others, then darkness, which is the opposite, would also obscure both self and others. If according to your view, fire illuminates the self of both self and others, then would darkness, being the opposite, also obscure the self of both self and others? But it is not so, so it is not right to say that fire illuminates the self of both self and others. Furthermore, that which illuminates dispels darkness, but fire and darkness do not coexist. If there is no darkness elsewhere, how does it illuminate? Here, fire itself has no darkness, and where fire exists, there is no darkness. That which is called illumination is the dispelling of darkness, therefore fire itself has no darkness, and where fire exists, there is no darkness, so what does fire dispel? What darkness does the fire dispel that illuminates the self of both self and others? Here it is said: 'Then, why does fire itself have no darkness? Where fire exists, there is no darkness? Is it not precisely because of this that fire illuminates the self of both self and others? When fire arises, it dispels darkness, so fire itself has no darkness, and where fire exists, there is no darkness, therefore the arising of fire itself illuminates the self of both self and others.' Here it is said: 'To say that fire illuminates when it arises is not correct. When fire arises, it merely does not encounter darkness.' To say that fire illuminates the self of both self and others when it arises is not right. Why? When fire arises, it merely does not encounter darkness, and because it does not encounter it, it does not dispel it. Because it does not dispel darkness, it also does not illuminate. Furthermore, or even if it does not encounter fire, it can dispel darkness, then what exists here? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one thinks that light can dispel all the darkness in the world. However, it is when light encounters darkness that it dispels it. Then, just as light does not encounter darkness, how can the light here dispel the darkness in all the realms of the world? This is not the case, therefore, the idea that light can dispel darkness without encountering it is unreasonable. Furthermore, if a pramana ( प्रमाण, prāmāṇa, cognitive tool) is established by itself, without relying on the prameya ( प्रमेय, prameya, object of cognition), then your pramana is established here, not relying on others, but self-born and self-established. If one thinks that like fire, pramana is established by itself, then even without relying on the objects to be measured, the pramanas will be completely established. Why? Because what is self-born does not depend on others. If it depends on others, it is not self-born. Here it is said, if the pramanas do not depend on the objects to be measured, what fault will there be? Here it is explained, if your pramana is established without relying on the objects to be measured, then these pramanas will not belong to anything. If the pramanas are completely established without relying on the objects to be measured, then what are these pramanas for? This will lead to the fault that pramana is not a pramana. If the pramanas belong to some objects, then they cannot become pramanas without relying on the objects to be measured. If one thinks that pramanas can only be established by relying on the objects to be measured, then what fault will there be in that? If the object to be measured is not yet established, it does not depend on others, then the established thing will go to establish the already established thing. If one thinks that pramana can only be established by relying on the objects to be measured, then if the object to be measured is not yet established, it does not depend on anything. Just as Devadatta (देवदत्त, devadatta, given by the gods) does not depend on anything when he is not yet established, your pramana will go to establish the already established thing. It is unreasonable to establish what has already been established, because what has been done should not be done again. Furthermore, if pramana depends on the object to be measured to be established, then the object to be measured does not depend on pramana to be established. If pramana depends on the object to be measured, then the object to be measured will not be established without depending on pramana. Why? Because what is to be established will not establish what can establish it, and pramana is what establishes the object to be measured. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
