The Root Teachings of the Six Great Volumes, Ztsa25, Commentary on Reversing Arguments Commentary on Reversing Arguments In Sanskrit: Vigrahavyāvartanīvṛtti (विग्रहव्यावर्तनीवृत्ति). In Tibetan: Commentary on Reversing Arguments. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! If the inherent nature of all things does not exist in all things, then your statement 'all things are empty' is also without inherent nature, and therefore cannot reverse (or negate) the inherent nature of anything. If the inherent nature of all things does not exist in the causes and conditions, nor in the aggregation of causes and conditions, nor in things different from causes and conditions, then all things are empty. For example, a sprout does not exist in the seed that is its cause, nor in any single condition such as earth, water, fire, or wind, nor in the collection of these conditions, nor in the aggregation of causes and conditions, nor in anything separate from the aggregation of causes and conditions. Because inherent nature does not exist in any of these things, the sprout has no inherent nature, and is therefore empty. Just as the sprout has no inherent nature because it is without inherent nature, and is therefore empty, so too all things are empty because they are without inherent nature. If this were not the case, then your statement 'all things are empty' would itself be empty. Why? Because it does not exist in the great elements (earth, water, fire, wind) that are its cause, nor in similar aggregates or non-aggregates, nor in the conditions such as lips, corners of the mouth, chin, tip of the tongue, teeth, palate, nose, forehead, etc., nor in the effort (of speaking), nor in the collection of the two, nor in the aggregation of causes and conditions, nor in anything separate from the aggregation of causes and conditions. Because it does not exist in any of these things, it is without inherent nature, and because it is without inherent nature, it is empty. Therefore, it cannot reverse anything. Just as fire cannot burn without fire, a weapon cannot cut without a weapon, and water cannot moisten without water, so too without (inherent nature in) language, one cannot reverse the inherent nature of all things. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that it can obstruct the inherent nature of all things. Or, if that statement has inherent nature, then you have broken your previous promise (that all things are empty). If your statement is different, then please explain the reason for this difference. If (you think) it is unreasonable for such a fault to exist, and believe that my statement has inherent nature, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, it is not because of this reason that it is emptiness. Therefore, if you think that this prevents the self-nature of all things, then, if that is the case, then the previous vow that 'all things are empty' will be invalidated. Furthermore, if your words are also included in all things, then why, since all things are clearly empty, is your word not empty, and therefore it prevents the self-nature of all things? If so, it will fall into sixfold contradictions. And what kind of contradiction is that? If all things are empty, then your words are also empty, because they are included in all things. Emptiness is certain, so refutation is unreasonable, so refuting 'all things are empty' is unreasonable. If the refutation is reasonable, then, because of refuting 'all things are empty', your words are also empty. Because it is emptiness, the refutation is unreasonable. If all things are empty, and your words that refute it are not empty, then your words are not included in all things, so this will become a contradictory example. If your words are included in all things, then, because all things are empty, it is also empty. Therefore, this cannot be refuted. If even if it is empty, it can refute 'all things are empty', then, even if all things are empty, it can function, but this is not what we want. If you think that becoming a contradictory example is unacceptable, therefore all things are empty and cannot function, then, even if your words are empty, they cannot prevent the self-nature of all things. Furthermore, if you say that, you will fall into the inconsistency of some being empty and some not being empty. If there is inconsistency, then please explain what is the difference in reasoning that causes some to be empty and some not to be empty. Because this reason is uncertain, it is unreasonable to say 'all things are empty'. Furthermore, like 'do not make a sound', the thought in your mind is unreasonable. Because there is sound here, making a sound is prohibited. For example, some people say 'do not make a sound'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
