'Existence' is also like this, 'existence' and 'non-existence' also exist. If the Buddhas contemplate, what is said is not easy to understand. That which is said to 'exist' can be examined; that which is said to 'not exist' can also be examined; that which is said to be 'existence and non-existence' is just examination. The meanings spoken by the Buddhas after contemplation are not easy to understand in any way. Here the debater says: Here, form is considered to be made of the four great elements, so it exists; the remaining non-form dharmas also exist accordingly. Here it is discussed: If form arises from the four great elements, then from truth or untruth, form will change. It does not arise from its own nature, because that does not exist, so it does not arise from another. If it is thought that form arises from the four great elements, then form arises from truth; arising from 'untruth' means speaking from a non-self perspective. Therefore, form does not arise from its own nature. Here the debater says: That's how it is, it does not arise from its own nature, but from another, the four great elements are like that. Here it is discussed: Because it does not exist, it does not arise from another. Form does not arise from another, because it does not exist, so that other does not exist. Why? Because one's own nature is not established, so it is unreasonable to say that it arises from another; what does not exist cannot be said to arise from another; what does not exist is not another. In addition, because the four great elements themselves do not exist; if it is thought that things arising from characteristics can be established, then that characteristic should not be established before the four great elements. If that is not established, the four great elements as the basis are also not established. One is not four, and four is not one; the four great elements do not exist, what can form rely on to be established? Therefore, there is no one in four, and no four in one. Relying on the non-existence of the four great elements, how can form be established? 'Non-existence' means 'not existence'. Also, because it is completely ungraspable, so if it is said from the aspect, that aspect does not exist. Because it arises from cause and condition. Even if it exists, it is unreasonable to have no aspect. Because it is completely ungraspable, form is non-existent. Why? Because it is completely ungraspable, form is completely ungraspable; how can it be said to exist for something that cannot be grasped? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2-293

2-293 Here, one should reason as follows: If one thinks, 'This sign is form,' and there is a mind with form, then the term 'form' can be established. Because meaningless things do not engage the mind. Therefore, if one thinks that the sign has form in the mind, then, what is said here is: 'From the sign, the sign does not exist.' This sign does not exist because it is not truly existent. Why? Because it is born from causes and conditions. This mind, which is the sign, is born from causes and conditions, therefore it does not exist. Furthermore, even if it exists, it is not reasonable to be without a sign. Even if form exists, it is not reasonable to be without a sign of form, because it is unreasonable to be without a sign. Moreover, if form can be apprehended, then the nature of self will also be apprehended. How can a mind born from emptiness, born from conditions, apprehend a non-existent form? If form can be apprehended, then what will the nature of self be like? It will apprehend its own nature. This is what is being said. However, this cannot be seen, because the self cannot apprehend the self. Because the nature is emptiness, how can a mind born from emptiness, born from conditions, apprehend a non-existent form? 2-294 Here it is said: In the Sutra Pitaka, it is often mentioned that one apprehends past and future forms. Therefore, the apprehension of form exists. Here it is said: 'When the mind arises for a moment, if it does not apprehend the moment when form arises, then how can it understand past and future forms?' Here, it is thought that both form and mind are momentary. When the mind arises for a moment, if it does not apprehend the moment when form arises, then how can one understand past and future forms? This is impossible, therefore it cannot be understood. The word 'how' is to clarify the meaning. This reasoning shows that form cannot be apprehended. Furthermore, even if one admits color and shape, it is still unreasonable to apprehend form. Why? 'When color and shape are never independent of each other, there will be no apprehension of different things as one, because these two are called form.' If color and shape were independent of each other, then it would be reasonable to apprehend them as different things. When color and shape are considered to be form, this is unreasonable. Furthermore, eye consciousness does not exist in the eye. 2-295 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
