Furthermore, form is without self. Just as the invisible is not form, so are the remaining sense bases (ayatana, twelve places) the same. In the same order, the remaining sense bases are also without self, because they have no own nature. Furthermore, if one contact occurs simultaneously, then the others are empty. Emptiness does not depend on non-emptiness, and non-emptiness does not depend on emptiness. When one sense base occurs simultaneously with contact, the others are empty; emptiness does not rely on non-emptiness, and non-emptiness does not rely on emptiness. Furthermore, the three (grasper, grasped, and grasping) are non-existent, the nature of not abiding, there is no aggregation, therefore it itself has no contact. Therefore, feeling is non-existent. The three are non-existent, not abiding in the nature of non-existence, there is no aggregation. Because there is no aggregation, it itself has no contact, that is to say, there is no contact arising from it. Because there is no contact, there is no feeling. Furthermore, depending on the inner and outer sense bases, consciousness arises. Therefore, consciousness is non-existent, empty like a mirage and illusion. Because consciousness arises depending on the outer and inner sense bases, therefore that consciousness is also non-existent, empty like a mirage and illusion. If one thinks that consciousness can exist as the function of consciousness, that is also unreasonable. Why? Because consciousness arises depending on what is to be known as consciousness, therefore it is non-existent. Because there is no object of consciousness and no consciousness, consciousness itself is also non-existent. Here it is said: 'Everything is impermanent,' by showing that everything is impermanent, it also shows non-emptiness. Here it is said: everything is impermanent, or there is nothing that is permanent. If things exist, then they are either permanent or impermanent, but how can those things exist? That is to say, things are non-existent. Here it is said: As explained in detail in the Ornament of the Sutras (Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra), desire (rāga), hatred (dveṣa), and delusion (moha) exist. Here it is said: Lovable and unlovable... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, what is the reason? Because afflictions such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance arise from conditions, therefore, by nature, there is no desire, hatred, or ignorance. Because desire, hatred, and ignorance arise from the causes of suffering, unpleasant causes, and inverted causes, therefore, by nature, there is no desire, hatred, or ignorance. Furthermore, because there is attachment, hatred, and delusion towards the same thing, therefore, these attachments, hatreds, and delusions are generated by discrimination, and discrimination itself is not truly existent. Because towards the same thing, there is attachment, hatred, and delusion, therefore, desire, hatred, and ignorance are generated by discrimination. Moreover, these discriminations are not truly existent, because the discriminations that generate desire, hatred, and ignorance are not truly existent. How can it be proven that they do not exist? The following explains: The object to be discriminated does not exist; if there is no object, how can discrimination exist? Therefore, because it arises from conditions, both the object to be discriminated and discrimination are empty. The object to be discriminated does not exist. If there is no object to be discriminated, then how can discrimination exist? Because it is born from conditions, both the object to be discriminated and discrimination are empty of inherent existence. Furthermore, because of truly realizing, the ignorance arising from the four inversions does not arise. If ignorance does not arise, actions will not arise, and the remaining branches are the same. Thus, through truly realizing, the ignorance arising from the four inversions will not arise. Because there is no ignorance, actions will not arise; similarly, the remaining branches will not arise. Furthermore, whatever arises in dependence on something is born from that, and without that, this will not arise. Existence and non-existence, conditioned and unconditioned, and nirvana are all like this. Whatever arises in dependence on something is born from that, and without that, this will not arise. The pacification of existence and non-existence, the pacification of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, and nirvana are all like this. Furthermore, regarding things that arise from causes and conditions, if one mistakenly believes them to be real, and clings to the object of dependence, generating wrong views, thoughts, and grasping, this is what the Buddha called ignorance. From ignorance arise the twelve links of dependent origination. Furthermore, because of truly realizing that phenomena are empty and fully understanding this, ignorance will not arise. This is the cessation of ignorance, and therefore the twelve links of dependent origination will also cease. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
