'The cessation of the twelve links of dependent origination. If those things are well understood as they truly are, being empty of inherent existence, then the arising of ignorance is the cessation of ignorance. Therefore, the twelve links cease. Why? Actions are like a city of gandharvas, like illusion, like mirages, like bubbles, like foam on water, like dreams, like a wheel of fire. Because having fully examined them, actions are like illusion, like mirages, like a city of gandharvas, therefore, if one well understands that they are empty of inherent existence, then ignorance will not arise, and that itself is the cessation of ignorance. Therefore, the twelve links will cease. In terms of inherent existence, there is no arising or ceasing of things. There is also no non-thing here. Things and non-things that arise from causes and conditions are empty.' 'If one searches, in ultimate truth, there is no thing that exists by its own nature, and there is also no non-thing here. Things and non-things that arise from causes and conditions are empty. Because all things are empty of inherent existence, the Thus-Gone One (Tathāgata) has incomparably taught that dependent arising relies on things. Because all things are empty of inherent existence, the Thus-Gone One has taught dependent arising. The ultimate meaning ends there. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, based on worldly conventions, have perfectly realized all varieties of phenomena. In ultimate truth, all dependently originated things are empty of inherent existence. That is the end of it. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, based on worldly conventions, have perfectly established all varieties of phenomena.' 'The teachings of the world will not perish, but in reality, no true Dharma has been taught. Because they do not understand the true meaning of what the Thus-Gone One has said, therefore, the ignorant will be afraid of this that has no object of clinging, that is without characteristics. The worldly convention that 'this arises because of this' is not something the Buddha would destroy. That which is dependently originated has no inherent existence; how can it truly exist? Because this arises in dependence on that, the Buddha does not eliminate this worldly convention.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If what is born depends on conditions, then it is empty of inherent existence. If it is empty of inherent existence, how can it be said to exist? This is a certainty. Devoted believers should diligently seek the truth, not relying on any religious doctrines. Practicing this Dharma, guided by reason, abandoning the attachment to existence and non-existence, one can attain the state of quiescence. A diligent believer strives to seek the right path, not relying on any established religious systems, pursuing this practice through logical reasoning, abandoning attachment to existence and non-existence, and ultimately attaining the peaceful state of Nirvana. If one understands the principle of dependent origination, one can escape the bonds of wrong views. In order to eliminate desire, ignorance, and hatred, one can attain undefiled Nirvana. Here ends the commentary on the Seventy Verses on Emptiness. Authored by the venerable master Nagarjuna. Translated and finalized by the Indian Abbot Jinamitra (Sanskrit: Jinamitra, meaning 'Victorious Friend') and the revising translator Pandit Yeshede (Sanskrit: Yeshede, meaning 'Wisdom Army'), and others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
