Form is neither in the eye, nor in between. Depending on the eye and form, there arises a false cognition. If examined, eye-consciousness is neither in the eye, nor in the form, nor in between the two. Therefore, the cognition that arises depending on the eye and form is false. Here it is said that the sense bases such as the eye exist, and their function is to see, etc. Among them, the eye is for seeing form, and the ear and others should be understood similarly. Here it is said: 'If the eye itself cannot see, how can it see form? Therefore, neither the eye nor form has self-nature. The other sense bases are also the same.' The eye itself is empty, and it is also emptied by others. Form is also empty in this way, and the other sense bases are also the same. 'Likewise' means that just as form is empty of itself and by others, the other sense bases are also empty of themselves and by others. This is shown consistently, therefore, form is empty of itself and by others. Furthermore, because it arises dependently, it is also empty. In this regard, the phenomena that arise from form itself are taken as the cause, and what is established thereby is dependently established. Whatever is established by depending on something, its own nature is not established. Therefore, form is empty of self-nature. It is also empty of others, and the others here are the eye and consciousness. The eye with consciousness is the grasper, and form is the grasped, and whatever is grasped is not the grasper. Therefore, it is also empty of others. Another way is that consciousness is internal, and form is the object of use and external. It is not internal, therefore it is also empty of others. From what does it arise? Consciousness itself arises dependently. How does it arise dependently? Consciousness itself arises depending on what is cognized, etc. Whatever arises dependently has no self-nature, therefore consciousness has no self-nature. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that consciousness can grasp subtle things, etc. 'Form is also the same' means that it is the same as this, just as the eye is empty of itself and by others, form is also empty of itself and by others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How is form (rūpa, material form) empty of its own nature (svabhāva) and the nature of others (parabhāva)? A: Because the nature of all things is not universally present, as previously stated. If investigated, all things are not existent; the very nature of all things does not exist, that is the meaning. 'Empty' means 'unobtainable'. The eye (cakṣurindriya) is empty because it arises dependently; the eye itself is established dependently. Whatever is established dependently, because it does not have its own nature, therefore the eye is empty of its own nature. If it is thought that the eye exists as the nature of another, that is also not permissible. Why? Because what does not have its own nature, where would the nature of another be? The nature of another also does not exist. Therefore, it is empty of the nature of another. In one way, being empty of the nature of another also means that it is the mind of another; the eye is also empty of mind, that is the meaning. Why? Because the eye does not have consciousness; because what does not have consciousness should not become the nature of what has consciousness, therefore it is also empty of the nature of another. Furthermore, the mind itself is empty. Here it is said: The eye sees its own nature, but the mind does not. Why? Because the mind is the grasper; because the mind grasps subtle things and so on, therefore it is the mind. But the eye sees its own nature. For example, the eye is the nature of the elements of earth and water; that is the nature of the eye. Only the mind grasps that. Similarly, only the mind grasps the distinctions of color and shape, the forms. Therefore, if the eye does not see its own self, how can it see form? What you said is not reasonable. Here it is explained: It is not like that. Why? The eye is empty of its own nature, it is empty of the nature of another, likewise, form is also empty, and the remaining sense bases (āyatana, sense organs and sense objects) are also empty in the same way. Here, the eye is empty of its own nature. 'Own nature' means oneself. If the eye does not see its own nature, how can it see form? Because the self is not seen, and form is not seen, therefore the eye is without self, without nature. Thus it is said. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
