The Root Teachings of the Six Great Volumes Ztsa24 Commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness ༄༅། །Commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness ༄༅། །In Sanskrit: Śūnyatāsaptativṛtti. (Commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness). Homage to the noble Mañjuśrī Jñānasattva. Existing or arising/ceasing, existent or nonexistent, inferior or equal or superior, the Buddha speaks according to worldly convention, not according to the power of true speech. Whether it is abiding, arising, or ceasing; existing or not existing; inferior, equal, or superior; all of that is spoken by the Buddha according to the power of worldly terminology, not according to the power of his own true speech. Here it is said: 'The term 'I,' and similar expressions, if they did not exist, the wisdom that thinks 'no-self' would also disappear, therefore 'I' must certainly exist.' Here it is explained: 'No-self, not no-self, self, and not no-self, there is nothing to be said. Why? Because all phenomena that can be expressed are empty in nature, like nirvāṇa.' Here it is said: 'All things are empty of inherent existence,' is this like a king's command? Or is there a reason by which one understands that 'all things are empty of inherent existence?' Here it is explained: 'Because the inherent nature of all things, in the collection of causes and conditions, or in each separate individual, or in all things, does not exist, therefore it is emptiness.' Because the inherent nature of all things, whether in causes and conditions, or in the collection of causes and conditions, or in all things, does not exist, therefore it is said that all things are empty of inherent existence. Furthermore: 'Because it exists, it does not arise; because it does not exist, it does not arise; because the dharmas are incompatible, it is neither existent nor nonexistent; because there is no arising, there is no abiding or ceasing.' Because a thing exists, it does not arise from a cause, because existence is said to be existing as it is. Because it does not exist, it does not arise from a cause. Because existence and nonexistence are incompatible, it is not arising, because they are mutually contradictory. Thus, existence and nonexistence are dharmas that have mutually contradictory natures, because the dharmas are incompatible, so how can what is neither existent nor nonexistent arise? Because there is no arising, there is also no abiding or ceasing. Here it is said: 'The three characteristics of conditioned phenomena are said to be endowed with arising, abiding, and ceasing,' and at the time of arising, arising is also shown, therefore some... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How does one understand things that arise from assembled causes? Here it is explained: Birth is not something to be created. The unborn is also not to be created. The time of birth is also not to be created. Because of birth and the unborn. Firstly, what is born is not to be created. Why? Because it is already born. What is already born is not to be created. What is unborn is also not to be created. Why? Because it is unborn. What is unborn is not to be created because it is separate from action, without power, and non-existent, therefore it is not to be created. The time of birth is also not to be created. Why? Because it is neither born nor unborn. Whatever is born or unborn, as in the previously stated order, is not to be created. Therefore, what is born is not to be created because it is already born. What is unborn is not to be created because it is unborn, separate from the action of birth, without power, and non-existent. Therefore, besides what is born and unborn, the third state, which is the time of birth, nothing exists, so it is also not to be created. Furthermore, because the cause is not valid, there is no birth. Why? If the result exists, then the cause associated with the result also exists. If the result does not exist, then the cause becomes meaningless. If the result is neither existent nor non-existent, that is contradictory. Because non-existence and existence cannot exist simultaneously. Furthermore, in the three times—past, present, and future—it is also not valid as a cause. If the cause exists before the result, then what is it the cause of? If the cause exists after the result, then what cause is needed for the already completed result? If the cause and result exist simultaneously, then the cause and result arise simultaneously, which is the cause and which is the result? Therefore, in all three times—past, present, and future—it is not valid as a cause. Someone says: Because numbers are valid, all things are not empty. Because there exist numbers such as one, two, and many. If things exist, then numbers are also valid, therefore all things are not empty. Here it is explained: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
