Without one, there are no many; without many, there is no one. Therefore, all phenomena arise dependently and are without inherent existence. Why? Because without one, there are no many; without many, there is no one. Therefore, all phenomena arise dependently, and thus are without inherent existence. Here, some say: In the Sutra Pitaka, dependent origination is profound, being the cause of suffering, and is extensively taught. Teachers who establish their tenets based on the scriptures also posit one consciousness and different consciousnesses. Therefore, all phenomena are not empty. Here it is explained: The twelve links of dependent origination, which are the cause of suffering, are unborn. They are not reasonable in terms of one consciousness, nor are they reasonable in terms of multiple consciousnesses. The twelve links of dependent origination, which are the cause of suffering, are unborn. This is not reasonable in terms of one consciousness, nor is it reasonable in terms of multiple consciousnesses. If one posits one consciousness, then the effect and cause arise simultaneously. If one posits different consciousnesses, then the preceding links cease and are not the cause of the subsequent links. Therefore, neither is reasonable, so dependent origination is unborn. Why is it unborn? Here, dependent origination is considered to arise from the cause of ignorance, and ignorance is shown to be a condition of perversion. These perversions are empty of inherent nature. Why? 'Impermanence is not permanence, non-self is not self, impurity is not purity, suffering is not happiness.' Therefore, all perversions do not exist. Impermanence is not permanence. If there is no permanence, then its antidote, impermanence, also does not exist. The rest are also applied similarly. Therefore, perversions do not exist. If there are no perversions, then the ignorance born from the four perversions does not exist. If there is no ignorance, then actions do not arise, and the rest are the same. Furthermore, ignorance and action arise neither with existence nor without existence. If there is no ignorance, then action does not arise. Therefore, since the two are mutual causes, their own nature is not established. Whatever is not established by its own nature, how can it generate? Therefore, the other is also not established, and the cause is also not established. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not a producer. If ignorance does not have action, it will not arise. If ignorance does not exist, actions will not arise either, because these two arise from mutual causes, therefore they are not inherently established either. If something is not inherently established, how does it produce other things? Therefore, those conditions that are not established are not factors that produce other things. Furthermore: Father is not son, son is not father. The two are not mutually non-existent, nor are they simultaneously existent. The twelve links of dependent origination are also the same. Father is not son, and son is not father. The two are not mutually non-existent, nor are they simultaneously existent. Just as father and son are not established in this order, the twelve links of dependent origination are similar to this. Furthermore: Like the happiness and suffering in a dream that depend on an object, and the object does not exist, whatever arises dependently also does not exist. Whatever is depended upon also does not exist. For example, in a dream, the happiness and suffering that depend on an object do not exist, just as the object does not exist, so too, whatever arises dependently, and whatever is depended upon, do not exist in the same way. Here it is said: If things are empty of inherent existence, then the distinctions of inferior, equal, and superior, and the various kinds of existence, will not be established. Manifestations arising from causes will not exist. Therefore, things are not inherently existent. This statement is unreasonable. Here it is explained: What is inherently established is not a dependent thing, and where does a non-dependent thing exist? Inherent emptiness does not change, and what is inherently existent does not perish. If things were inherently existent, then they would not be dependent things. If one thinks that even without dependence, things still exist, then it is explained here: Where does a non-dependent thing exist? A non-dependent thing will not exist. If something could become something even without dependence, then it would not become inherently empty, and what is inherently existent would not perish, nor would it disappear. Here it is said: The thought of 'one's own thing,' 'another's thing,' and 'non-existent thing' is not without a basis, therefore things are not empty. Here it is explained: For a non-existent thing, how could one's own thing or another's thing be destroyed? Therefore, another's thing, a non-existent thing, and an existent thing and one's own thing are all inverted. 'Non-existent' means 'not existent.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
