Because the merits are not yet complete, the cycle of existence does not cease. Like Indra, clouds, Brahma, and the sun and jewels, the Tathagata is like an echo and an image. Like the sky and the earth. Just as pure beryl, its nature appears on this earth. Because of purity, in that lord of the gods, together with the retinue of goddesses, there is a supreme palace, and other divine abodes, and his various palaces and many divine objects are seen. Then, groups of men and women, those who dwell on this earth, saw that vision, and prayed: 'May we also, in the near future, become like this lord of the gods.' They diligently practiced virtue for the sake of attaining such a state. Those people, by means of virtuous deeds, even without understanding 'this is just an appearance,' will pass away from the earth and be reborn as gods. That vision is very, without conceptualization, and without wavering. Even so, it is closely connected to this earth with great significance. Similarly, possessing stainless faith and so on, cultivating the qualities of faith and so on, the complete Buddha appears in one's own mind, endowed with marks and signs, walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, displaying various postures, speaking the peaceful Dharma, or remaining silent in equipoise, displaying various miracles, possessing great radiance, beings will see. Having seen that, those who are desirous, firmly believe that it is the Buddha, and thereby diligently practice virtue, thereby attaining the desired state. That vision is very, without conceptualization, and without wavering. Even so, it is closely connected to the world with great significance. Although ordinary people do not understand 'this is the appearance of one's own mind,' even so, they can see forms, and those forms are meaningful to them. Gradually, relying on seeing those forms, those who abide in this vehicle will be able to see the inner Dharmakaya with the eye of wisdom. Just as the beryl, pure and stainless, is far from all dangerous places, the clear and beautiful jewel, possessing stainless qualities, is glorious and equally illuminates above. Because of purity, various gods, the lord of the gods, and the forms of the gods appear there. Gradually, because of abandoning the qualities of the earth, that vision will disappear again. In order to attain that real state, people devote themselves to fasting, asceticism, and steadfastly giving alms and other virtuous deeds. Groups of men and women, with longing hearts, scatter flowers and other offerings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to attain the Lord of Sages (Shakyamuni Buddha) who appears in a mind like pure vaidurya (lapis lazuli), the sons of the Victorious One, who possess great joy, should generate such an excellent mind. Just as the image of the body of the Lord of Gods appears on a pure vaidurya ground, similarly, the image of the body of the Lord of Sages appears on the pure ground of sentient beings' minds. The image appears in the minds of beings, without confusion, and enters by the power of one's own pure mind. Just as the appearance of things in the world is, one should not look at it as existing or ceasing. Just as the gods in the heavens, by the power of their past white deeds, without effort, abiding, or mental formation, and without conceptualization, the sounds of impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and peace, constantly urge the unmindful gods, like a drum of Dharma. Similarly, the pervasive lord (Buddha), although free from effort and so on, pervades all beings with the Buddha's speech, and teaches the Dharma to those who are fortunate. Just as the sound of the gods' drums in the heavens arises from their own actions, similarly, the Dharma spoken by the Sage in the world arises from his own actions. Just as that sound, separated from body and mind by effort, accomplishes peace, similarly, the Dharma, free from effort and so on, accomplishes peace. Just as in the city of the gods, the sound of the drum arises, bringing fearless giving, and when entering the battle of afflictions, it dispels the play of the Asura armies. Similarly, in this world, meditation, formlessness, and so on arise, completely destroying the afflictions and sufferings of sentient beings, and proclaiming the path of supreme peace. Since all beings are one's own parents, and possess the three qualities of benefit, happiness, and miracles, therefore, the Buddha's voice surpasses the sounds of the celestial instruments. The great sound of the drum in the heavens does not reach the ears of those who dwell on the earth, but the sound of the Buddha's drum reaches the underworlds of samsara. In the heavens, there are many billions of celestial instruments, which sound to increase the fire of desire, but even a single sound from those who possess compassion enters to pacify the fire of suffering. The beautiful and pleasing sounds of the celestial instruments are the cause of increasing mental agitation, while the speech of the Thus-Gone One, who possesses compassion, is the very thing that encourages concentration, focusing the mind, and stimulating thought. In short, in whatever realm of the world, whether in the heavens or on earth, whatever is the cause of happiness, it is said to completely rely on the sound of the Buddha, which pervades the world. Just as when one is separated from the ear, the sound becomes faint. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
