Just as the four schools of philosophical tenets have no difference in realizing the essence of a vase, but have a very large difference in realizing the state of the vase. The fourth question is, according to the four tenet proponents, the four different generation stages are established as the four tantra sets. The Gelugpas say, 'Our own school is not one of the four tenet proponents.' Regarding this, the oral tradition of Je Rinpoche says, 'If there is one's own school that accepts the Mind-Only tenet, then it fulfills the meaning.' It seems that way, and in my own mind, from the perspective of one's own school, the Mind-Only view can be summarized as: realizing that external objects are without inherent existence and clinging to the inner mind. But you have summarized one's own school as Madhyamaka, which is the meaning of the general characteristic. Please explain the detailed reasons for this.' The answer is that the general characteristic is definitely not establishing the four tantra sets in accordance with the four tenet proponents. Generally, the term 'four tenet proponents' refers to the four: Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Chittamatra, and Madhyamaka. The general characteristic's intention is: in the Vehicle of Characteristics, there are four situations: accepting the inexpressible self of a person; not accepting that, but accepting external objects; not accepting that, but accepting the subject's clinging; and not accepting objects, so not clinging to them. The first is the lower Hinayana Sthavira and Vatsiputriya schools; the second is the superior Hinayana Kashmiris and Sautrantikas; the third is the Pratyekabuddha Arya; and the fourth is the Madhyamaka and Chittamatra. Therefore, since they have four tenets, it is inappropriate to call the people who speak of them the 'four tenet proponents,' as explained earlier. Therefore, the Gelugpas saying 'Our own school is not one of the four tenet proponents' is also not understanding the opponent's view. Just because one speaks of one tenet does not mean that one is placed among the four tenet proponents. Some notes say, 'If there is a Pratyekabuddha who accepts the Mind-Only tenet, then it fulfills the meaning,' but that does not mean that the note-taker fully understood the oral tradition. The general characteristic's intention is to combine the Pratyekabuddha Arya's tenet with the Yoga Tantra, and to combine the Mind-Only tenet with the Anuttarayoga Tantra. Therefore, whether it fulfills the meaning or not can be clarified by analysis. Some later scholars connect the general characteristic's intention with the four tenet proponents and the four tantra sets. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone, in order to refute Bu-ston's commentary on the Prajnaparamita, says: 'The self-awareness that clings to inherent existence is Svasamvedana (自生智,self-cognition), and the non-duality of subject and object is the ultimate truth.' These two views are the tenets of the Cittamatra (唯识宗,Mind-Only school), and those who think they are the same are ridiculous. To refute this common view and try to rebut it is also ridiculous, because Bu-ston's verses and the meaning of the common view seem to be the same. Don't put a meaningless bag over your head. Therefore, you say that it is easy to gather everything into Cittamatra through the view of Svasamvedana. However, Jetsun Tsemö (至尊策莫,Revered Tsemö), although not clinging to Svasamvedana, believes that clinging is truly established, which is related to the quotation from the Abhisamayalankara (现观庄严论,Ornament of Clear Realization) and the generation stage of the Yoga Tantra. Since both Madhyamaka (中观宗,Middle Way school) and Cittamatra do not cling to Svasamvedana, it is believed that there is no clinging there, which is related to the generation stage of Anuttarayoga (无上瑜伽,Highest Yoga). Therefore, there is no happiness in your mind. The reason why we gather Svasamvedana into Madhyamaka is that once the tenets of Madhyamaka are acknowledged, all three vehicles must be gathered into Madhyamaka. Because at that time, without relying on the view of Madhyamaka, none of the three vehicles can attain Bodhi. Similarly, Cittamatra gathers all three vehicles into Cittamatra, Sautrantika (经部宗,Sutra school) gathers all three into Sautrantika, and Sarvastivada (分别说部,the school of saying all exists) gathers all three into Sarvastivada. If you understand this way, this doubt will be eliminated. Apart from that, I have never said that combining the four classes of tantras and the four philosophical schools, gathering Svasamvedana into Madhyamaka. The fifth question is, is it true that saying the secret mantra was spoken by all the Buddhas of the past, present, and future is definitive meaning, and saying it was not spoken is to express the greatness of the Guhyasamaja (密集金刚,Assembly of Secrets)? Does it correspond to reality or not? If it is the former, then explaining its meaning through the six limits and four modes, but the six limits and four modes are not explicitly stated in the root tantra, but rely on the explanatory tantra, the Compendium of Wisdom Vajra (智慧金刚总集,Collection of Wisdom Vajras), to elaborate, is it not? If it is the latter, then the Buddha becomes a liar, how should this be explained? The answer is: Generally speaking, when the Buddha praises greatness, there must be a basis for praise, so he will not become a liar. The basis for praise does not necessarily have to be explained through the six limits and four modes, because the Guhyasamaja's own path of maturation and liberation and its surroundings are the basis for praise.
