This is not the ignorance (avidyā, ignorance, not understanding) mentioned in the doctrine, because it does not follow meritorious and unwavering formations. Then, how does the ignorance arising from the afflictive mind, due to inward observation, initiate good and non-good actions? Because there are two types of intention: the intention at the time of cause and the intention at that time. 'Ignorance conditions formations' refers to the intention at the time of cause, not the intention at that time. Otherwise, meritorious and unwavering actions would also become afflictions, because ignorance is the condition at that time. This is a detailed explanation. To reveal the unreasonableness of this statement, there are three faults: the fault of contradictory commitment, the fault of uncertain proof of one's own doctrine, and the fault that the intention at that time is not included in the twelve links of dependent origination. First, if the ignorance of others' intention is unwholesome, then all actions initiated by it should become unwholesome. After refuting, one's own ignorance of intention, although it is an affliction, does not cause all actions initiated by it to become only afflictions, because it considers the intention at the time of cause, which is the same in all cases, because others can also say that it considers the intention at the time of cause. Secondly, as proof of the ignorance of the mind's accompanying afflictions, 'it does not follow meritorious and unwavering formations' is a very rough statement, because if it is the ignorance of intention, then it does not pervade initiating all three actions. Thirdly, the ignorance that has become the intention at that time of formation, you (ignorance) are not included in the twelve links, because you are not included in any of the twelve links from ignorance to old age and death. If you say that it is included in the second link, that is not the case, because the second link is the ignorance that initiates. Furthermore, due to the ignorance corresponding to the wrong view that there is no result of actions, the actions of falling into evil destinies, etc., should not exist, because if it is the ignorance of intention, then it must be the afflictions accompanying consciousness. The self-doctrine holds that both the abandonment of seeing and the abandonment of cultivation exist. As it is said in the *Fifty Verses on the Guru*: 'The one who has entered the stream says that the branch has been abandoned, is everything completely abandoned?' Answer: 'Not everything, only a part is abandoned.' The one who has entered the stream... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as that, so too is the once-returner. Does the non-returner mean they have abandoned the limbs? If in the desire realm, it means all practices in the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, there is no certainty regarding practices. Does the Arhat mean they have abandoned the limbs? Because it is said, 'All practices in the three realms are abandoned.' Here, ignorance (avidyā) is divided into two types: ignorance of the workings of karma and its results, and ignorance of the ultimate truth. The former instigates all non-meritorious actions, while the latter instigates meritorious and unwavering actions, as explained in the Compendium of Topics (Abhidharmasamuccaya). Action (saṃskāra) is karma accompanied by defilements (sāsrava), instigated by its cause, ignorance, and capable of projecting rebirth. It is divided into three types: non-meritorious action, meritorious action, and unwavering action. Their characteristics are, respectively: actions that project into the lower realms, actions that project into the happy migrations of the desire realm, and actions that project into the higher realms. Consciousness (vijñāna), from the perspective of cause, is the aspect of the all-ground (ālaya) that holds the imprints of karma; from the perspective of result, it is the consciousness that first arises in the place of birth, dependent on karma. Asaṅga holds the aspect of cause, because it is said, 'What are the limbs that project? Ignorance, action, and consciousness.' Nāgārjuna holds the aspect of result, because it is said, 'From two, seven arise.' Then, how should we understand the statement in the Dependent Arising Sutra (Pratītyasamutpāda Sūtra) that 'this consciousness has six divisions of aggregates'? Some Abhidharma masters believe that, according to Asaṅga's view, the aspect of the all-ground seed has the ability to generate the six aggregates. According to Nāgārjuna's view, the consciousness that first arises in the place of birth, dependent on karma, has the ability to generate the six aggregates when it encounters the two conditions of self-condition and object-condition. Alternatively, it can be understood as referring to the case where spontaneously born beings simultaneously possess name and form (nāmarūpa) and the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana). Name and form (nāmarūpa) refers to the formation of the five aggregates in the second moment of linking rebirth. Then, what is the reason for the discrepancy with the order of the five aggregates explained elsewhere? Some Abhidharma masters believe that it is explained from the perspective of the taker and the taken, but this is not reasonable, because they are all aggregates of resultant maturation (vipāka), so they are the same as the taken. Therefore, although the aggregates of name are formed at the time of consciousness, it is called name and form when the aggregate of form is formed in the second moment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
