Those who have forgotten the reason for how external and internal things appear, and acknowledge that everything arises from the truly existent Alaya Consciousness (kun gzhi'i rnam shes), therefore they do not correctly understand dependent origination. Although they merely acknowledge the term for cutting off the four extremes of arising (mtha' bzhi'i skye ba), they have not actually cut them off, because they acknowledge arising from other material causes and conditions. In short, from the outsiders to the Mind-Only school, all the realists say that external and internal things arise either from themselves, from others, from both, or without a cause, therefore they do not correctly understand dependent origination. As the Protector Nagarjuna (mGon po klu sgrub) said, 'Suffering is made by oneself, or made by others, or made by both, or imagined by the causeless thinkers. You say it arises in dependence.' Therefore, only the Madhyamikas (dBu ma pa) correctly understand dependent origination. When analyzed with reason, it is neither from self, nor from other, nor from both, nor without a cause. No thing, anywhere, ever has arising.' Although the four extremes of arising cannot be found in this way, in conventional terms, 'depending on this cause, this effect will arise,' which is not contradictory, therefore, although there is no arising, it appears as if there is arising. Although it appears as if there is arising, there is actually no arising, and this is established as dependent origination. In short, for external dependent origination such as a seed producing a sprout, and internal dependent origination such as ignorance producing formations, although cause and effect are acknowledged in conventional terms, if one analyzes whether the cause and effect themselves are one or different, permanent or impermanent, existent or non-existent, etc., then acknowledging any one of these is the view of the realists. The Madhyamikas do not acknowledge any side, but merely acknowledge that depending on how things appear, 'from this cause, this effect arises.' From beginningless and endless afflictions, karma, and ripening results, to the boundless cycle of samsara, like a fire wheel, rotating without interruption. Having fully understood this way of samsara, cut it off with the wisdom that realizes no birth and no death. This well-spoken explanation that clarifies the nature of samsara and nirvana, does not confuse the key points of each school, especially focusing on the conventional dependent origination of the Madhyamikas, and those with intelligence who are not confused about the meaning of the scriptures should apply it. The single accomplishment of cause and effect is like mixing mud. Even if one has heard it a hundred times and is accustomed to reciting it, without this key instruction... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The arrogance of self bursts forth like a tidal wave, the waves of words churn, yet are merely meaningless bubbles. A single cycle where the former cause gives rise to the latter effect. If direct and indirect factors are combined, a double cycle of cause and effect of samsara arises. Even so, how are they regarded as a single cycle? The necessity of such an assertion, and how to combine its resultant accomplishments? And comparing this to the time-compressed lifespan, and the key to other tenets regarding them as a double cycle? What I understand of these is based on the teachings of Rongton Dampa, and is not shared with others. May this merit, transformed into a rain of wisdom vajra fire, utterly destroy the wheel of existence of beings as boundless as the sky. May we, in a healing land where merits accumulate and suffering is transcended, be nourished by the food of liberation's blissful fruit. This work, entitled 'The Manifestation of Interdependence: A Clear Elucidation of Samsara and Nirvana,' was written by Dokham pa Sonam Senge, who touched the foot dust of the omniscient Sangye Pel, the lifeblood of the immutable teachings, in the Iron Male Tiger year, in the month of Grozhin, at the Dana Naseling monastery. The scribe was Zhonnu Lodan. May the merit arising from this virtuous act enable all beings pervading the sky to attain the wisdom of the Sugata. May it be the sole remedy for the suffering of beings, the source of all happiness, and may the teachings flourish, be revered, and endure for a long time. Auspicious! Auspicious! Auspicious! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
