Because ignorance ceases, actions arise. Therefore, the previous refutation is also not valid, because from the cessation of ignorance, stainless wisdom arises, and from that, stainless mind of the cessation of actions arises, and so on. The Tenets of the Madhyamaka School: Fourth, regarding the tenets of the Madhyamaka school, there are three points: identifying the basis upon which dependent origination is established; explaining the nature of dependent origination as it is established on that basis; and demonstrating how the understanding of dependent origination is superior to that of the lower schools. Identifying the Basis Upon Which Dependent Origination is Established: First, all phenomena that are named based on the mere appearance to the mind of the subject, rather than being established from the perspective of the object's own mode of existence, are dependent origination. As stated in the *Root Verses on the Middle Way*: 'Apart from dependent arising, there is no phenomenon. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there is no phenomenon.' So, what is the reason why dependent origination and emptiness have the same meaning? In conventional appearance, it is not without a cause, nor does it arise from a dissimilar cause. Although cause and effect are each definite, when analyzing with reason the reason why the effect arises from the cause, because it is free from the four extremes of arising, the very arising of the effect from the cause is not established. This is dependent origination. As Nāgārjuna said: 'The flame of a lamp, a mirror, a burning glass, seeds, sourness, and sound, and the combination of aggregates in rebirth, the wise understand do not transmigrate.' Therefore, no matter how the realists establish dependent origination, because they accept that cause and effect are true, they are mistaken about the meaning of dependent origination. The arising of a false effect from a false cause is the key to dependent origination, which is not contradictory to the two truths. As Āryadeva said: 'Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts through all nets of wrong views.' Explaining the Nature of Dependent Origination as it is Established on that Basis: Second, there are two types: dependent origination of cyclic existence and dependent origination of purification. Dependent Origination of Cyclic Existence: First, there are seven points: the nature of each limb; the way in which the later limb arises from the earlier limb; the collection of limbs; the definite number of limbs; the meaning of the term 'dependent origination'; the way in which it is completed in how many lifetimes; and the analysis of similar grounds. The Nature of Each Limb: First, among the twelve limbs, some say: 'Ignorance is a mental factor that operates by not being clear about the object.'

Among the mental factors arising in the retinue of consciousness, the nature of mind (the fundamental consciousness) is: it should be the signified (the object to be expressed), because it possesses that definition. The reason is established, because the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness) is the primary consciousness that engages with objects in an unmanifest way. Some say that the mental factor that contradicts wisdom and the mode of grasping is: the ignorance that contradicts wisdom and the mode of grasping, along with the corresponding attachment, should be the signified, because it possesses that definition. The reason is established, because the ignorance that contradicts wisdom and the mode of grasping is the same in terms of object and appearance. The Svātantrika (independent school) asserts that the deluded mental factor that contradicts wisdom and the mode of grasping, which is capable of initiating all contaminated actions, is the definition of ignorance as stated here. To this, some say: the ignorance abandoned by cultivation in the continuum of a noble disciple of the Śrāvakayāna (Hearer Vehicle) should be the latter branch, because it is the signified. If you concede, then their continuum should also have newly produced karma that projects rebirth, etc. If you think so, that is not pervasive, because in their continuum, the karma that accomplishes rebirth does not nourish the karma that projects rebirth, because their continuum does not have the afflictions that initiate the karma that accomplishes rebirth. If it is not established, then the ignorance abandoned by cultivation in their continuum cannot initiate contaminated actions, which contradicts the fact. Here, when examining whether the ignorance mentioned here is abandoned by seeing or abandoned by cultivation, the *Don sang rnam par bshad pa* (Explanation of Hidden Meanings) states: 'Because this is what projects rebirth, and the *rTen 'brel gyi mdo 'grel* (Commentary on the Sutra of Dependent Origination) states: Those who see the truth do not have what projects rebirth.' Therefore, it is only the ignorance to be abandoned by seeing. Some scholars refute this by saying: 'That is unreasonable, because the continuums of birds and wild animals, etc., that have not been transformed by philosophical tenets also have the ignorance mentioned here.' This is pervasive, because if it is ignorance abandoned by seeing, then it must be a conceptual construct that is transformed by philosophical tenets. Furthermore, the merit accumulated in the desire realm and the unwavering formations will become unwholesome, because all the afflictions abandoned by seeing that operate in the desire realm are only unwholesome.' After refuting, the Svātantrika asserts that it is only abandoned by cultivation, because it is the common cause of all formations, and because it is unmixed ignorance belonging to the afflicted mind. The ignorance belonging to the mental consciousness is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
