Because of arising. From existence arises birth; by the power of existence, beings are led to other realms and other places of birth, this is because of arising. Because of arising. From birth arises aging and death; by the power of birth, there is a change in age and the cessation of the life force, this is because of arising. The Collection of Limbs: Third, the collection of limbs is divided into: collecting into cause and effect, collecting into three types of pervasive defilements, and collecting into four limbs of projection and accomplishment. First: According to the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, ignorance, formation, and consciousness are three, and craving, grasping, and existence are six, which are the limbs of the cause. The remaining six are the limbs of the effect. According to Nāgārjuna, consciousness is also considered a limb of the effect, so there are seven limbs of the effect. Second, ignorance, craving, and grasping are the defilements of defilements, because they arouse all karmic defilements and lead to the defilements of birth. Formation, consciousness, and craving are the karmic defilements, because they are aroused by the defilements of defilements and lead to the defilements of birth. The remaining six are the defilements of birth, because they are the nature of maturation that has become the result of karmic defilements. According to Nāgārjuna, consciousness is also explained as the defilement of birth. Nāgārjuna said, 'The first, eighth, and ninth are defilements; the second and tenth are karma; the remaining seven are suffering.' The *Abhidharmakośa*, the *Madhyāntavibhāga*, and the *Śrutamayībhūmi* also explain it in this way. The *Abhidharmakośa* says, 'Three are defilements, two are karma, four and seven are thus the result.' The *Madhyāntavibhāga* says, 'Three kinds, two kinds, karma and defilements; seven kinds arise from incorrect thought.' The *Śrutamayībhūmi* says, 'Three are the path of defilements, two are the path of karma, and seven are the path of suffering.' What is the meaning of these views? Asaṅga refers to the seed aspect of the Ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness). The views of Nāgārjuna and the *Abhidharmakośa* are based on the condition where the Ālaya-vijñāna is not differentiated. While the *Madhyāntavibhāga* and the *Śrutamayībhūmi* refer to the maturation aspect of the Ālaya-vijñāna. Third, all twelve limbs are collected into four limbs of projection and accomplishment. If ignorance, formation, and consciousness are regarded as the part of the cause, then these three consciousnesses are the projecting limbs. Name and form, six sense sources, contact, and sensation are the limbs that are projected. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Craving, grasping, and existence are the accomplishing limbs; birth and aging are the accomplished limbs, because of this reason. Regarding the causes and effects that propel, in terms of what propels, how it propels, and what is propelled, the first is ignorance and action, because by the power of ignorance, action creates karma. The second is in the manner of imprinting habits on consciousness, which is considered from the aspect of the cause. The third is divided into body and enjoyment. In terms of the nature of the body, it is name and form; in terms of the distinction, it is the six sense sources; in terms of enjoyment, it is contact in terms of the enjoyment of objects, and feeling in terms of the enjoyment of maturation. Regarding the causes and effects of accomplishment, in terms of what accomplishes, how it accomplishes, what is accomplished, and its faults, the first is craving and grasping, because by the power of craving, one closely grasps, thereby accomplishing. The second is existence, in the manner of making maturation powerful by the power of craving and grasping. The third is birth, because it is the nature of maturation. The fourth is aging and death, because it is the fault of its state. As it is said in the commentary on dependent origination: 'What propels and how it propels, that which accomplishes, also in that, what are the faults, all those, the twelve limbs have shown. Two with one limb, with four aspects and two with, one with one with one, in seven meanings well shown.' 'Because of not knowing the truth as it is, because karma has imprinted on the mind, the four limbs propel in sequence, its seed also increases. The born one who is thus propelled, the craving born from feeling, because grasping arises, its need of karma becomes manifest. The accomplished born one, also in that, why are there faults such as aging, the one who sees the truth has no propelling, the one who is free from craving has no arising.' These are also divided into two parts: one is combined with a portion of the limbs that appear in the sutras, and the other is combined with a portion encompassed by the causes and effects of samsara. If according to the former, then everything is combined with the manifest, and in reality, there are two parts of cause and effect, because manifest feeling gives rise to craving. If according to the latter, then the four from name and form to feeling need to be established as seeds, and after the causes and effects that propel are the causes and effects of accomplishment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
