Because of arising. Fourth, regarding the definite number of limbs: Does ignorance (avidyā) have a cause and old age and death (jarāmaraṇa) have a result? If they do, then the number of limbs would exceed twelve; if they do not, then cyclic existence (saṃsāra) would have a beginning, and ignorance would become a non-entity, and the other limbs would also have no cause, because ignorance has no cause. If one limb is complete, one would effortlessly be liberated, because old age and death have no result. The answer to this is: Ignorance has a cause, and old age and death have a result, but there is no fault of the number of limbs exceeding twelve, because they belong to different parts of dependent arising. As the Ratnāvalī says: 'The three paths have no beginning, end, or middle; the circle of cyclic existence is like a firebrand wheel; this, which has mutual causes, becomes cyclic existence.' The way of that is also in the Essence of Dependent Arising: 'From the three, two arise; from the two, seven arise; from the seven, three arise; this is the wheel of existence; it revolves again and again.' Its meaning is that in the state of birth and old age and death, the clinging to the aggregates (skandha) as true, the belief in reality (satya-graha), continues uninterruptedly, which is the conceptual thought (vikalpa) of the obscuration of knowledge (jñeyāvaraṇa). It moment by moment generates the belief in reality, clinging to things and persons as true, which is ignorance, one of the twelve limbs. As the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness says: 'Whatever thought truly conceives of things born from causes and conditions, that is what the Teacher called ignorance, from which the twelve limbs arise.' Therefore, ignorance, which clings to the aggregates as true, is said to be the cause of the twelve limbs. Similarly, the Root Verses on the Middle Way says: 'Actions (karma) and afflictions (kleśa) are conceptual thoughts.' The Ratnāvalī says: 'As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be self-grasping.' The Guhyasamāja Tantra says: 'Actions and afflictions, and inappropriate attention (ayoniśo manaskāra), always abide.' These inappropriate attentions, until one realizes that the aggregates are without inherent existence, are the belief in reality, clinging to phenomena as true, and therefore are ignorance, which is the cause of the twelve limbs. When the path of seeing (darśanamārga), which directly realizes that the aggregates are without inherent existence, arises, both the śaikṣa and aśaikṣa of the Lesser Vehicle, and the bodhisattvas below the seventh ground of the Great Vehicle, cling to the aggregates as mere imputations, which is the conceptual thought of the obscuration of knowledge, and therefore increase contaminated actions (sāsrava karma).

It is not so! It is said in the scriptures: 'Seeing the truth, one does not regress.' This is in reference to both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. If that is the case, until one realizes that the skandhas (aggregates) are without inherent existence, in all stages of the twelve links of dependent origination, there is a clinging to the skandhas as truly existent. Therefore, will there also be ignorance that clings to beings as truly existent? It is entirely acceptable to think so. The *Four Hundred Verses* states: 'As the body has bodily powers, ignorance transforms into everything. Therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying ignorance.' Therefore, to fully understand the undistorted view of the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) school regarding this profound key point, one must learn from oral transmission. The Meaning of Dependent Origination Fifth, if all twelve links of dependent origination are categorized as afflictions, what is the reason for categorizing them as afflictions? Because ignorance leads beings into affliction by obscuring the seeing of the reality of objects; similarly, action plants the seeds of rebirth; consciousness leads to the place of birth; name and form hold the body of rebirth; the six sense sources complete the body of rebirth; contact, when the three (object, sense faculty, and consciousness) are combined, fully knows the changes of the object; feeling closely connects with experiencing the ripening of karma; craving gathers the body of rebirth; grasping engages in the karma of rebirth; existence manifestly inclines towards rebirth; birth connects with suffering, etc.; and aging and death connect with the suffering of changing age and the exhaustion of life force, thus leading beings into affliction. As it is said in the *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes*: 'Because of obscuring and because of planting, because of leading and because of holding, because of completing and because of the three cuttings, because of close connection and because of gathering, because of engaging and because of manifesting, because of suffering, beings are afflicted.' How Many Lifetimes to Complete Sixth, regarding the question of how many lifetimes it takes to complete the twelve links of dependent origination, which are summarized by the cause and effect of samsara (cyclic existence), and the question of how many lifetimes it takes to complete the twelve links mentioned in the sutras, there are two cases to discuss. First, if it is very fast, it is possible to complete it in two lifetimes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
