Entities like ‘Īśvara’ (the powerful one), possess the nature of phenomena. Regarding your arising, the power of the mind born from wrong views (mithyādṛṣṭi) and attention (cetanā) can be seen, but you are not produced by the aggregation of qualities of ‘self’ (ātman), because you arise and cease following the presence or absence of wrong views and attention, and not following the aggregation of qualities of ‘self’. Therefore, those who have received the empowerment of ‘Īśvara’ by those who possess self-grasping, possess the nature of phenomena. Why do they not go to the place where ‘Īśvara’ etc. arise? Because they will go. Because the cause of arising—wrong views and attention—has not diminished. Refuting the view that the cause of arising diminishes: Second, if it is said that through the empowerment of ‘Īśvara’, wrong views and attention become powerless, therefore they will not be reborn again, then, for the individual (Pudgala) who has received the empowerment of ‘Īśvara’, immediately after receiving ‘Īśvara’ etc., the power of the two types of consciousness produced by the function of the eye etc., the grasping of objects, the entering into objects, distraction, and cessation, will all disappear. Because immediately after the empowerment, wrong views and attention become powerless. If it is said that the empowerment will not cause rebirth elsewhere at the time of death, because there is no factor that propels the subsequent consciousness, then, the defilement of dying—wrong views—will connect to the subsequent wrong views. Because the causes and conditions for connecting subsequent wrong views are complete and there are no obstacles. If it is said that the reason given is not established, because the empowerment has made these wrong views lose the ability to produce the former, then, the empowerment will also make the living person lose the ability to produce the former. Because doing so after death and the reason are the same. Establishing the reason for not diminishing: Third, the continuum of faults—wrong views—will not turn back from the empowerment. Because its seed originates from self-grasping, and the empowerment does not harm it. Therefore, the continuum of faults—wrong views—has the previous self-grasping as its cause, because if the opponent—the side of realizing no-self (anātman)—increases, you will decrease; if your own side—the previous self-grasping—increases, you will increase. Refuting the view that ‘self’ is also a cause of arising: The fourth point is divided into two parts: pointing out the harm to the permanent ‘self’, and dispelling the excessive inference about it. Pointing out the harm to the permanent ‘self’: First, if it is thought that only wrong views and attention are the cause of cyclic existence (saṃsāra), this is unreasonable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone asks, 'Is it because the permanent self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城体:ātman,梵文罗马拟音:ātman,汉语字面意思:I) is needed as the cause of samsara?' Answer: The permanent self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城体:ātman,梵文罗马拟音:ātman,汉语字面意思:I), as the subject, is contradictory to gradually producing results, because it does not need to rely on conditions. Similarly, it is also contradictory to produce results later, because the nature of the time when results are produced and the time when results are not produced is the same. Furthermore, the agent arising from the cause and the enjoyer of the result will also become the same, because the permanent self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城体:ātman,梵文罗马拟音:ātman,汉语字面意思:I) is both. If someone says, 'This is not established, because the enjoyer of the result is different from the agent.' Answer: The nature of the agent, as the subject, will lose the ability to enjoy the ripening result, because it is different from the enjoyer of the ripening result. Furthermore, the self, as the subject, also does not establish the ability to produce results, because it is permanent. Second, refuting excessive inferences: If someone says, 'If others experience, create, see, etc., then it will become others remembering, enjoying, recognizing, etc., because the experiencer and the rememberer are not the same.' Then, are you making such inferences from the perspective of a person (藏文:གང་ཟག), or from the perspective of a phenomenon (藏文:ཆོས,梵文:dharma)? If it is the former, then what others experience will become what others remember, etc., because the person who experiences and the person who remembers are not the same. This inference, as the subject, does not harm Dharmakīrti (藏文:ཆོས་གྲགས,梵文:Dharmakīrti), because some people do not have experiences, etc., so Dharmakīrti's pervasion of you is uncertain, and therefore you will receive an answer that agrees with the other party's intention. If it is the latter, then what other aggregates of phenomena experience will become what other aggregates of phenomena remember, etc., because the phenomenon of the experiencer and the phenomenon of the rememberer, etc., are not the same. This inference, as the subject, does not harm Dharmakīrti, because later memories, etc., arise from the experiences of previous aggregates of phenomena, so Dharmakīrti will give you an answer that agrees with your intention, because it is reasonable for phenomena to arise from experiences, but it is not reasonable for people to arise from experiences. Here, it is necessary to understand this key point: Realists believe that experiences, memories, etc., can be analyzed by reason, and those who believe in the substantial existence of a person believe that a person's experiences, a person's memories, etc., can be analyzed by reason, while realists from the Kashmir Sarvāstivāda (梵文:Sarvāstivāda) onwards believe that placing these on a person is merely nominal designation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
