In order to attain supreme otherness, and because of the self-grasping that persists, even knowing the aggregates and other phenomena arise and cease, one remains deluded. Therefore, attachment as a phenomenon, is not merely caused by seeing the object and the Pudgala (Sanskrit: Pudgala, person or sentient being) as one and the same; even knowing that the object and the Pudgala are distinct, you still generate attachment. So, what is the obstacle to self-grasping? Attachment to the self is the cause of self-grasping, because merely by your existence, consciousness aimed at an object arises, and the inner limbs, such as the aggregates, naturally cling to the self. Inability to Abandon Attachment Through Disgust with Suffering The third part is about the inability to abandon attachment through disgust with suffering, which is divided into two points: Revealing that disgust is not non-attachment, and refuting the fault of non-attachment. Revealing That Disgust Is Not Non-Attachment The first point is: If, by seeing the aggregates and other phenomena as suffering, disgust arises, thereby abandoning attachment to the object, then, for someone who clings to the self, when they see certain objects as suffering, the disgust that arises is the same as hatred, not non-attachment, because attachment still exists at that time, as they seek happiness to escape suffering. Therefore, hatred characterized by disgust only lasts as long as suffering exists, because it is the cause and result of suffering. Once suffering disappears, it will again rely on its own nature, which is attachment. Refuting the Fault of Non-Attachment The second point is: If it is thought that non-attachment is impossible, then, for all objects that are lovely and unlovely, the Pudgala who has no likes and dislikes, and maintains equality and equanimity, is called non-attachment, because they have abandoned grasping at what to take and what to discard in relation to objects. To what extent of equanimity is called non-attachment? If one person respectfully smears one side with sandalwood, and another cuts flesh with a knife out of hatred, but (the practitioner) has no attachment and anger towards them, remaining equal, then you are called non-attachment, because you are the epitome of abandoning grasping at what to take and discard. Refuting the Contradiction with the Statement That Suffering Is a Subject of Meditation The fourth part is refuting the contradiction with the statement that suffering is a subject of meditation: If seeing the aggregates and other phenomena as suffering, and being disgusted with suffering, is not non-attachment, then, in the Sutras, suffering is said to be a subject of meditation --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone asks, 'Is this contradictory?' Answer: 'It is not, Bhagavan (usually refers to the Buddha)!’ The practice of suffering spoken of by the Buddha does not refer to the suffering of suffering (duhkha-duhkha, obvious pain), but to the suffering of conditioned existence (samskara-duhkha, suffering arising from impermanence and uncertainty). The suffering of conditioned existence that we speak of is only the contaminated aggregates (sasrava skandha, aggregates influenced by afflictions) born from the primary cause of craving (trsna, thirst) as spoken of in the origin of suffering (samudaya, the source of suffering), and not merely the suffering of suffering. Here, explaining the earlier things, that is, momentary things that arise from conditions, as being subject to causes and therefore becoming suffering, is a statement without distinguishing the tenets. Because in the view of the Sutra School (Sautrantika, a school of Buddhism), contaminated composite things are also subject to causes. Practicing the suffering of conditioned existence is not just for your own liberation, but to make you understand that you are different from others and to realize the view of no-self. Only by realizing the view of emptiness (sunyata, emptiness, no self-nature) that is different from others and without self-nature can liberation be attained. The remaining practices, such as impermanence, suffering, etc., are all for the purpose of generating the view of realizing emptiness. Therefore, the World Honored One also said that by realizing impermanence, one can realize suffering; by realizing suffering, one can realize no-self. As it is said in the sutra: 'Bhikkhus (Buddhist monks)! What do you think? Is form (rupa, material form) permanent or impermanent?' 'Venerable, it is impermanent.' 'Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering?' 'Venerable, it is suffering.' 'Is it reasonable to regard something that is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change as “This is me,” “This is mine,” “This is my self”?' 'Venerable, it is not.' If one cannot be free from attachment, one will wander in samsara. Third, if one cannot be free from attachment, one will wander in samsara, which includes two points: It has been shown that possessing the three is a cyclic existence, and not possessing the three is too extreme. It has been shown that possessing the three is a cyclic existence: First, a person (pudgala, individual) who clings to 'I' and thinks that 'I' is suffering is called a cyclic existence, because they have not attained liberation. This is because they have not been liberated from afflictions (klesha, negative emotions) and karma (actions and results). They have not been detached from 'I', and they cling to 'mine', constantly creating karma in order to obtain 'mine'. Not possessing the three is too extreme: Second, if there is no attachment to 'mine' when liberation is attained, then the statement 'cannot be free from attachment' is not established. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
