Therefore. The effort of meditating on suffering will become meaningless. The fourth part has two sections: pointing out the absurdity of the inference, and refuting the defense against the fault. Pointing out the absurdity of the inference: Firstly, seeker of liberation, it is meaningless to meditate on ‘mine’ as suffering in order to be free from attachment to ‘mine’. Because even if you meditate on those ‘mine’ as suffering, it only directly cognizes that they themselves are suffering, and that alone will not make you free from attachment to ‘mine’. Because some ‘mine’ are suffering, which is already evident, but even so, there is no freedom from attachment to them. Refuting the defense against the fault: Secondly, if seeing suffering leads to detachment, because seeing faults in some objects leads to detachment from them. Then, one with self-grasping, even if seeing faults in ‘mine’ causes the mind of attachment to recede for the moment of seeing the fault, you will never completely detach from ‘mine’, because you are still attached to other things. This is universally applicable, because in general, if there is a distinction between what should be taken and what should be discarded in relation to some objects, then the attachment arising from one object to be taken, when generated by various conditions, becomes the seed of attachment to all previously discarded objects. For example, a lustful person, seeing a fault in one woman, reduces manifest attachment, but still has attachment to other women, and using that as a cause, attachment arises to the previous woman as well. If ‘I’ has no faults, then there will be no object of attachment and detachment: The fifth part has two sections: pointing out the absurdity of the inference, and refuting the defense against the fault. Pointing out the absurdity of the inference: Firstly, practitioner, will you be attached to or detached from the Dharma of Samsara, which is something with faults? You will not be attached or detached, because ‘I’ has no faults, and the attachment to ‘I’ as an object has no faults, and the ‘mine’ as the object of proof also has no faults, therefore they are not objects of attachment and detachment. This is universally applicable, because beings, that is, the Dharma of Samsara, are just those three. Acknowledging the previous reason, because if ‘I’ has no faults, then the other two are naturally considered faultless. Refuting the defense against the fault: Secondly, the reason that attachment to ‘I’ as an object has no faults is not established, because attachment to ‘I’ is the basis of suffering, therefore it also has faults. The word ‘also’ here is to emphasize that from the perspective of ‘mine’ as an object, ‘I’ has no faults. Then, ‘I’ has faults --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, the basis of suffering is the same for you as well. If admitted, then the object of attachment for those who seek liberation, because it is merely flawed, should be separated from whatever I possess and not be clung to. Because even to the flaws of what I possess, I do not have attachment to those flaws. If recognizing faults does not lead to abandoning attachment. Sixth, if attachment to 'mine' arises from seeing virtues, then seeing faults should destroy it. However, attachment to possessions such as power is not solely caused by seeing the virtues of 'mine'. Because you can see it even in children and livestock who do not know the difference between virtue and fault; you can see it even in your own flawed senses; even if possessing virtues, you do not see it in the power of others; even if seeing virtues in possessions such as hair that has fallen from the body, you do not have it. If the cause of attachment to 'mine' is the thought of 'mine', and it is abandoned by meditating on suffering, then the cause of the arising of the thought of 'mine' towards 'mine' is not solely from seeing the virtues of 'mine'. Because you can see it even in children, etc., therefore it is the same reason. Therefore, for beings, seeing that power, etc., is not a virtue but a fault, does not abandon the thought of 'mine' towards power, etc., because the thought of 'mine' does not arise solely from seeing virtues. If there is no harm to the cause, it cannot be abandoned. Seventh, furthermore, how does the practice of meditating on 'mine' as suffering harm attachment to 'mine'? Because it does not harm it, because its cause—attachment to self—is not harmed. This is because, for virtues that do not exist in 'mine', through fabrication, attachment to self also appears in 'mine'. If knowing that 'self' and 'mine' are different does not lead to abandonment. Second, knowing that 'self' and 'mine' are different does not lead to abandonment. The Samkhya school says: Attachment does not arise from seeing virtues, but if nature is grasped as the object of attachment, and if the person (Sanskrit: Pudgala, Devanagari: पुद्गल, Roman transliteration: pudgala, literal meaning: person) is grasped as one, then attachment will arise to that object. If they are known to be different, then one will be free from attachment. Then, all ordinary people should be free from attachment to power, etc. Because through this you know that 'self' is different from power, etc., even if they do not wish 'self' to become other, they still possess power, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
