Refutation of Arguments for 'Self' The second part has two points: refuting the view that 'self' is destroyed by meditating on suffering; refuting the view that 'self' is destroyed by generating suffering. Refutation of the View that 'Self' is Destroyed by Meditating on Suffering Firstly, if one cultivates attachment to 'self' etc. as suffering, thereby abandoning the thought of 'mine' towards it, then the argument 'by what means will one's own mind be reversed' is not established. If one thinks so, then even if attachment to 'self' etc. is seen as suffering, one will not abandon the thought of 'mine' towards it, because the cause of your arising the thought of 'mine' is due to the connection between 'self' and the aggregates etc., and even if that connection is seen as suffering, it remains as it was before. Therefore, the argument is accepted, and the Vaibhashika view is refuted. The Samkhya school believes that the object to be grasped as 'self' and the grasping purusha are known as one, so the thought of 'mine' arises towards it, and they also believe that being known as one is caused by mixing together. This is unreasonable, because you do not have the thought of 'mine' towards the form etc. of 'self', because there is no mixing connection between you and 'self', nor is it known as one. This cannot be accepted, because seeing 'self' as something that benefits is present in all external 'mine'. Refutation of the View that 'Self' is Destroyed by Generating Suffering The second point is that a person who has attained liberation will not have the thought of 'mine' towards the senses etc., and will abandon them, because the senses etc. are seen as causing suffering, like a finger held by a poisonous snake. Therefore, the argument 'by what means will one's own mind be reversed' is not established. If one thinks so, then the senses etc. are not seen as causing suffering in all respects, because it is possible that they are also seen as a cause of some temporary happiness. If one abandons them merely because the senses etc. are mostly seen as causing suffering, just as one abandons poisonous food because it is mostly seen as causing suffering, then both examples are not established. Because, a person with the thought of acceptance and rejection, if he obtains special food, will be detached from poisonous food that contradicts it because of attachment to the happiness of that special food, because he abandons the slight happiness due to craving for special happiness. A person without the thought of acceptance and rejection, just like attachment to 'self', also engages in poisonous food etc. as he finds it, because they have no thought of acceptance and rejection, and only pursue the happiness of food. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of attachment to 'mine'. For example, seeing some desirous people, when they cannot find a woman, they are seen to engage in desire with a female animal. If I abandon 'I', then the nature of 'I' does not exist. Second: The 'I' in the state of samsara (འཁོར་བའི་གནས་སྐབས,Samsara, 轮回) has the nature of destruction. Because previously having 'I' and all that is related to it, later it will completely lose all 'I' and all that is related to it. It cannot be thought this way, because those who think that 'I' exists, how would they think that 'I' will be destroyed? They are unwilling. The 'I' in the state of liberation (ཐར་པའི་གནས་སྐབས,Liberation, 解脱) has the nature of 'I' as thought by those who are attached to 'I', but in reality it is not so. Because they think that 'I' is the wrong basis of all experiences, all terms, and all merits such as wisdom. This is universal, because the nature of 'I' that is clung to by those who are attached to 'I' is not the basis of experiences, etc. If there is 'self-grasping' (བདག་འཛིན་,Self-Grasping, 我执), then attachment to 'mine' will arise. The third part is divided into two points: the real proof and refuting the wrong views. The real proof: First, a person who has 'self-grasping' but is not attached to 'mine' will definitely be attached to 'mine', because he has 'self-grasping'. This is universal, because in any case, 'self-grasping' will firmly cling to 'I', and attachment to 'I' is the seed that produces attachment to 'mine', and this situation always exists. Therefore, in order not to be attached to 'mine', a person who regards 'mine' as suffering, even if he tries to regard 'mine' as suffering, attachment to 'I' will still hinder him from not being attached to 'mine', and will cover up the faults of 'mine', making him unable to see them. Because he sees the merits of 'I', he has the seeds that, like conditions, cause him to be attached to 'I'. Refuting the wrong views: Second, if one is attached to 'I', then one will not be unattached to 'mine', even if one is unattached to 'mine', one will also be unattached to 'I' because one is unattached to 'I', then the sign of being attached to 'I' is not established. Now, a person who is not attached to 'mine', because he regards 'mine' as suffering, he is not attached to it, but just because of this, it is thought that he will abandon 'mine', which is impossible. Because just like not being attached to 'I', how can one abandon 'I'? This is impossible. If one thinks so, then the act of regarding 'mine' as suffering by a person who regards 'mine' as suffering will become meaningless. Even if one is not attached to 'mine', one will not abandon 'mine'.
