Therefore, it is to know that it is not left to one's own devices. Second, how does inference become a valid means of knowledge? If one asks, 'Although it is established as direct perception in the scriptures, how is it established as inference?' The Teacher (Buddha) is the subject, and is considered inference, because the fact that inference is also a valid means of knowledge is not refuted, while the fact that sound, etc., are valid means of knowledge is refuted. Not only is it not refuted, but whatever has the nature of slightly arising is impermanent, having the nature of destruction. And, 'From smoke, one knows fire,' etc., in many ways, the application of this inference is seen to be taught. It is pervasive, whatever mark has the characteristic of not arising without the object to be proven is the basis of inference. That relationship of not arising without the mark and the object is also clearly explained by the previous statement, because the pervasion of the object to be proven, such as impermanence, etc., to the reason, such as being born, etc., is shown. Third, showing the conclusion with the title. In the commentary on 'A Compendium on Valid Cognition', 'Rays of Light of All-Goodness', the chapter on establishing valid cognition, that is, the explanation of the second chapter, is completed. To that self-grasping person who sees faults in attachment, the subject is: what prevents attachment to the fruit (self)? It cannot be prevented, because there exists the cause of not lacking attachment to the self, which is grasping the self as having qualities. Grasping the self as having qualities is the cause of attachment to the self, because attachment to the self itself is due to seeing qualities, not because of attachment to the self, but because seeing the qualities of the self causes attachment to the self. Third, showing the contradictory commitment to the flawed itself. Third, what fault do you see in attachment to the self? If you say that it is because it serves as a basis for suffering, therefore it should be abandoned, then regarding this attachment to the self, the subject is: even if it serves as a basis for suffering, it should not be separated from attachment, because it is always seen as beneficial to the self. For example, although the self is a basis for suffering, it is the cause of the mind that grasps the self, so it should not be separated from attachment. If you say that the self cannot be established as flawed, because if there were no attachment to the self and what belongs to the self, then the self alone would not be the cause of suffering, then regarding attachment to the self, etc., the subject is: it should be without flaws like the self, because if there were no self as a friend, you alone would not be the cause of suffering. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that's the case, then you would necessarily conclude that attachment to 'self', attachment to 'mine', and liberation from both are incompatible. This is because all three are without fault. There is no other way to abandon attachment to 'mine'. The second part is divided into four sections: It is not possible to abandon attachment by meditating on suffering, etc.; It is not possible to abandon attachment by knowing the difference between 'self' and 'mine'; It is not possible to abandon attachment by generating aversion to suffering; and Refuting the view that meditating on suffering can abandon attachment. It is not possible to abandon attachment by meditating on suffering, etc. The first section is divided into two parts: stating the view and presenting the refutation. Stating the view: If, like abandoning a limb seized by a snake by meditating on suffering, even if there is a clinging to 'self', by meditating on 'self' and 'mine' as the source of suffering, one can abandon attachment to them. Then, the premise that 'there must be attachment to "self"' is not established. Presenting the refutation: The second part is divided into two sections: refuting the analogy and refuting the meaning. Refuting the analogy: The limb seized by a snake, you do not abandon it merely by meditating on suffering, but because you abandon it by destroying the thought of 'mine'. Conversely, if there is a thought of 'mine', you will not abandon it. Refuting the meaning: The second part is divided into seven sections: If there is a clinging to 'mine', it is impossible to abandon; If 'mine' is abandoned, there is no characteristic of 'mine'; If there is a clinging to 'self', attachment to 'mine' will arise; The effort of meditating on suffering will become meaningless; If 'self' is without fault, there is no object of attachment and liberation; Merely knowing the fault cannot abandon attachment; and Because the cause is not harmed, it cannot be abandoned. If there is a clinging to 'mine', it is impossible to abandon. The first section is divided into two parts: If there is a clinging to 'mine', there is no attachment and liberation; Refuting the argument for abandoning the clinging to 'mine'. If there is a clinging to 'mine', there is no attachment and liberation: If there is a clinging to 'self' that knows that 'mine' is faulty, then from where does attachment to and liberation from 'mine' come? It is impossible, because nothing can prevent the clinging to 'mine'. Because the senses, etc., 'mine', are the basis of enjoyment and are considered to be the cause of benefit to oneself. This is a universal phenomenon: For hair, nails, etc., that are separated from the body, because they are not considered to be beneficial to oneself, aversion arises; while for hair, etc., that are on another's body, because they are considered to be beneficial to oneself, a clinging thought arises. All of this is evident. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
