Therefore, it is established that you are the fruit of a wise one who possesses the three qualities, because of this. If one asks, 'Does this contradict what was previously said about abandoning the meaning of Sugata?' Then, the term 'Sugata,' by its very nature, you possess the three meanings of realization, so it can be explained as 'Gone to Bliss,' because you engage in the three special realizations due to the distinctions of conditions. Therefore, 'Thubpa' (The Capable One), by its very nature, is established as surpassing those detached from externalism, the Stream-enterers, etc., who are learners, and the Arhats, etc., who are non-learners, because, as the sequential proofs show, you possess the three knowledges of knowing things as they are, knowing them constantly, and knowing them completely. How the Teacher is Established from This: Third, how the Teacher is established from this is: 'Thubpa' (The Capable One), by its very nature, applying and becoming accustomed to the means of knowing the benefit of others, is given the name 'Teacher' at the time of fruition, which is established as preceding, because you possess the three special knowledges. How Loving-kindness is Established from This: Fourth, how loving-kindness is established from this is: 'Thubpa' (The Capable One), by its very nature, is established as possessing loving-kindness towards others, because of becoming accustomed to the vast means for the benefit of others, and because, even having achieved self-benefit and perfect realization, you do not abandon the activity of teaching the Dharma for the sake of others. Therefore, it is Established as Diligent: Fifth, therefore, it is established as diligent: 'Bhagavan' (Blessed One), by its very nature, is established as the measure of a person who seeks liberation through diligence in the means of valid cognition, because possessing great loving-kindness, you speak of what is good, beneficial, and true from great wisdom, accompanied by proof, and also in speaking thus, you are manifestly diligent and zealous. Explaining the Necessity of Praise by Valid Cognition: Third, explaining the necessity of praise by valid cognition has two parts: Showing the necessity of establishing valid cognition; and the manner of establishing inference as valid cognition. Showing the Necessity of Establishing Valid Cognition: First, if one asks, 'Bhagavan' (Blessed One) possesses immeasurable qualities, so what is the necessity of praising with valid cognition?' Then, praising the Teacher with such qualities that have become valid cognition is necessary, because the system of valid cognition itself is established from the teachings of 'Bhagavan' (Blessed One), and not arbitrarily established by Dignāga, for the sake of understanding this. The Manner of Establishing Inference as Valid Cognition: Second, if one asks, 'Although direct perception can be established from the scriptures, what about inference?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How is valid cognition (tshad ma) established? A: The Teacher (ston pa, referring to the Buddha) possesses Dharma (chos). He considers inference (rjes dpag) as valid cognition, because the validity of inference is not denied, and the validity of sound, etc., is denied. Not only is it not denied, but also whatever has the nature of slightly arising, all of that is subject to cessation, that is, has the nature of disintegration. For example, 'From smoke, one knows fire,' etc. In many ways, the application of this inference is seen. It is pervasive; whatever sign (rtags) has the characteristic of not arising without the property to be proven (bsgrub bya'i chos) is the basis of inference. The relationship of not arising without the property (chos) is also clearly explained by the previous words, that is, to show that the property to be proven, such as impermanence, pervades the reason, such as being born. Finally, concluding with the title: The third part is the explanation of the second chapter, the chapter on establishing valid cognition, from the commentary 'Samantabhadra's Rays of Light' (kun tu bzang po'i 'od zer) on the 'Pramanavarttika' (tshad ma rnam 'grel). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
