Therefore, practicing this path is to counteract samsara (khorwa). The root of suffering in samsara lies in ignorance (marikpa), encompassed by the view of self (jikta), and craving (seyupa) as a contributing factor. Thus, the chapters of this treatise are also divided into two parts, which are the chapters that counteract these respectively. The first part is: 'The path already described,' indicating that the realization of selflessness (dakme) has the power to abandon samsara. To prove this, it is necessary to start from three aspects: observing the reality of the object, the contradiction between the view of self and realization, and the view of self being the root of samsara. First is: 'Consciousness (namshe) grasps the dharma of the object,' and so on. Second is: 'The view of emptiness (tongnyi) contradicts it,' and so on. Third is: 'Whoever sees a self,' and so on. If one recognizes that other paths have the fault of self-attachment, practices contemplating the senses as equal to suffering, recognizes that the senses and the self are different, and feels aversion to suffering, these do not contradict the view of self and self-grasping, so they cannot abandon the view of self, and therefore cannot counteract samsara. For example: 'If attachment has faults,' and so on. The meaning of all these is summarized as: 'Therefore, those who desire liberation, without hindrance,' and so on, which is one verse. The second part is: As argued in the chapter of the Sugata (tonpa) and the chapter of the origin (kunjung), if one cannot abandon craving, one cannot abandon the suffering of samsara, because craving is a contributing factor that inevitably produces suffering. If one cannot abandon craving, then relying solely on the rituals mentioned in the scriptures, because these rituals do not harm the fundamental self-grasping, one cannot abandon the inverted craving as a result. For example: 'The scripture is such a reality,' and so on. The path of realizing selflessness is through abandoning the fundamental self-grasping, thereby being able to abandon craving as a result and its retinue. For example: 'Relying on the Four Noble Truths (denpa shiyi tentpa),' and so on. The meaning of all these is summarized as: 'Although karma and body remain,' and so on, which is one verse. There is no method to counteract karma and body independently of counteracting afflictions (nyonmong). For example: 'Karma and body are not abandoned,' and so on. In this way, taking the path of liberation of one's own school as the main content of the chapter, and refuting the paths of liberation of other schools, it is inappropriate to annotate Tibetan classics without paying attention to this approach. The way to attain liberation through the practice of selflessness, as well as refuting other views, establishes the realization of emptiness as the correct path, and that the antidotes that have not abandoned self-grasping are not feasible. In the latter, there are three methods that cannot be used as antidotes: attachment to 'mine,' merely the rituals mentioned in the scriptures, and methods of exhausting karma and body. Other schools establish their own path of liberation and refute the paths of liberation of other schools. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dividing the above two views into two categories. For the latter, contemplating selflessness (separation from attachment to self), contemplating suffering (such as the senses are suffering), recognizing the difference between the senses and the self, feeling aversion to suffering, and performing rituals as described in the scriptures, considering it unreasonable to exhaust karma through asceticism. Stringing these views together constitutes the two ways of how to apply antidotes. If one does not distinguish the other views that each of these two methods refutes, but simply applies them dogmatically, and insists that this treatise is for debate, then one is greatly mistaken. I, Sakya Pandita, by the blessings and good words, have no burden of ignorance regarding the key points of logic. Furthermore, karma and the body are not antidotes. The third aspect is that apart from the path, there is no other way to counteract karma and the body. This includes four aspects: abandoning karma and the body is meaningless and ineffective; refuting the existence of antidotes to exhaust karma; eliminating the contradiction with wanting to exhaust karma; and eliminating the similarity between karma and afflictions in terms of cause and effect. Abandoning karma and the body is meaningless and ineffective. First, just as the path is the method to counteract afflictions, the path should also become the method to counteract karma and the body, because karma, the body, and afflictions are all the root causes of generating samsara. If someone thinks this way, then a seeker of liberation should not merely abandon karma and the body, because there is no antidote that merely abandons these two, and without abandoning craving, there is no ability to abandon these two. This argument is valid, because if craving exists, karma and the body will arise again. If someone says, then isn't it better to strive to eliminate both craving and karma? Then, a seeker of liberation, even if you strive to eliminate both craving and karma, the effort spent to exhaust karma is meaningless, because having abandoned craving, karma will no longer arise. Refuting the existence of antidotes to exhaust karma. Second, the argument that 'there are no antidotes' is not valid, because asceticism can exhaust the power of previous karma. If someone thinks this way, then defiled karmas can be distinguished according to their ability to produce different results, because we see them producing various different results. Therefore, the afflictions brought about by asceticism, that is, the source of suffering, you cannot exhaust all karma, because some of your forms, such as hunger, produce small results, while those karmas that produce different types of suffering cannot even reduce their results. If the power of asceticism is strong... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
