Showing the function. This is to avoid being too extreme. Refuting the argument for a permanent self: Firstly: If it is thought that wrong views and consciousness alone are the cause of samsara, this is unreasonable. Because the permanent self must also be the cause of samsara. If this is the case, then it is contradictory for the permanent self, as a subject, to gradually produce results, because it does not depend on any conditions. Similarly, it is also contradictory to produce results later, because the nature of the time when results are produced and the time when they are not produced is the same. Furthermore, the agent of the cause and the enjoyer of the result will also become the same, because the permanent self is both the agent and the enjoyer. If it is thought that this is not established, that the enjoyer is different from the agent, then the agent's self, as a subject, will lose the ability to experience the ripening of karma, because it is different from the one who experiences the ripening of karma. Furthermore, the self, as a subject, also does not have the ability to produce results, because it is permanent. Avoiding overly extreme views: Secondly: If others experience, create, and see, etc., it will become others' memories, enjoyment, and recognition, etc., because the experiencer and the rememberer are not the same. If this is the case, is this inference made from the perspective of the person (Pudgala), or from the perspective of phenomena (Dharma)? If it is the former, then what is experienced by others will become others' memories, etc., because the person of the experiencer and the person of the rememberer are not the same. This inference does not harm Dharmakirti, because some people do not have experiences, etc., so Dharmakirti can answer with 'uncertain pervasion'. If it is the latter, then what is experienced by other aggregates (Skandha) will become other aggregates' memories, etc., because the phenomena of the experiencer and the phenomena of the rememberer are not the same. This inference does not harm Dharmakirti, because the earlier aggregate's experience will produce the later aggregate's memories, etc., so Dharmakirti can answer with 'acceptance', because it is reasonable that the phenomena's experience will produce the phenomena's memories, but the person's experience will not produce the person's memories. Here, it is necessary to understand this key point: Realists believe that experience and memory, etc., can be analyzed with reason, while those who believe in a real person do not. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some argue that experiences and memories of a person can be analyzed by reason. However, the realists, such as the Kashmir Sarvastivadins, believe that attributing these to a person is merely a nominal designation. Experiences and memories that can be analyzed by reason should be attributed to dharmas (phenomena). For example, the eye consciousness perceiving blue is an experience, and the subsequent memory is a recollection; the karma accumulated by the mind is enjoyed by the subsequent feeling. Therefore, a person does not have experiences and memories, so the experiences and memories of others do not exist. The experiences and memories of dharmas are different because they are cause and effect. The Madhyamaka-Prasangika school believes that in the conventional realm, experiences and memories can be attributed to both dharmas and persons. However, experiences and memories are not other, because if they are cause and effect, they cannot be other. These are very important for epistemology and logic, so I hope that wise people will keep them in mind. Therefore, the antidotes to counteract wrong views will be taught below. The third part explains the antidotes to counteract wrong views, which is divided into two parts: explaining the antidote to eliminate craving; without craving, there will be no samsara. Explaining the antidote to eliminate craving: The first part is: The correct view of contemplating the sixteen aspects such as impermanence through proper attention can eliminate all cravings and the accompanying miserliness and jealousy. Because its object is the Four Noble Truths, and its aspects are the sixteen aspects of proper attention such as impermanence, which are contrary to the sixteen inverted views such as permanence. This is because, for the Truth of Suffering among the Four Noble Truths, one clings to permanence, pleasure, self, and purity; for the Truth of Origin, one clings to the four inverted views such as non-cause; for the Truth of Cessation, one clings to the four inverted views such as non-cessation; for the Truth of the Path, one clings to the four inverted views such as non-path. Therefore, due to ignorance, one clings to these sixteen aspects of non-proper attention, thereby generating craving and adopting or rejecting pleasure and pain. Without craving, there will be no samsara: The second part is: A Pudgala (person) who has abandoned the craving arising from self-grasping, even if karma and body still exist, will not be reborn, because among the three main factors leading to samsara—karma, afflictions, and body—the main factor, afflictions, no longer exists. Just as a sprout will not grow without a seed. Here, the selflessness is realized through the scriptures of the Truth of the Path. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
