Refuting the view that meditating on suffering contradicts liberation: If meditating on the aggregates as suffering and generating aversion to suffering is not detachment, then how does this not contradict the sutra's statement that suffering should be meditated upon? World Honored One, it is not because you consider the suffering of suffering that you say to meditate on suffering, but because you consider the suffering of pervasive conditioning that you say to meditate on suffering. Our suffering of pervasive conditioning is also just the contaminated aggregates born from craving, as explained in the context of the origin of suffering, and not merely the suffering of suffering. Here, the previous explanations of momentary arising of phenomena and arising from causes as suffering due to being subject to other causes is a statement without distinguishing tenets, because in the Sautrantika school, uncontaminated conditioned phenomena are also subject to causes. Meditating on the suffering of pervasive conditioning is not something only you can be liberated from, but rather you are merely the basis for realizing the view of selflessness, which is different in nature from the 'I' you cling to, and liberation will occur through realizing the view of emptiness, which is different in nature from the 'I' you cling to. The remaining meditations on impermanence, suffering, etc., are all meaningful for generating the view of realizing emptiness, therefore the World Honored One also said that from understanding impermanence, one understands suffering, and from understanding suffering, one understands selflessness. As it says in the Samyukta Agama Sutra: 'Bhikkhus, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent?' They replied, 'Venerable Sir, it is impermanent.' 'If it is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering?' They replied, 'It is suffering.' 'If it is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is it proper to regard this as 'This is mine, this is me, this is my self'?' They replied, 'No, Venerable Sir.' If there is no detachment, one will wander in samsara. Third, if there is no detachment, one will wander in samsara, divided into two parts: revealing those with three conditions as samsaric beings; without three conditions, it is too extreme. Revealing those with three conditions as samsaric beings: First, sentient beings who cling to 'mine' and consider 'mine' to be suffering are samsaric beings and cannot attain liberation, because they have not been liberated from afflictions and karma. This is because they have not detached from clinging to 'I', have craving for 'mine', and accumulate karma in order to obtain 'mine'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it depends on all authors. If it is not threefold, it is too extreme. Secondly, if it is said that upon attaining liberation, since there is no attachment to 'mine,' it is not without attachment, then this is not established. Then, upon attaining liberation, the subject of the proposition, there should also be no enjoyer of 'mine,' because 'mine' itself is not desired, it is abandoned. If asserted, then upon attaining liberation, that 'self' that you assert should also not exist, because there is no agent or enjoyer. This is an acceptance of pervasion, because the 'self' is considered to be characterized by action and enjoyment. Thirdly, therefore, the advice to uproot is that the person who desires liberation, the subject of the proposition, should uproot from the root the view of the perishable collection arising from the seed of the beginningless cause, the similar previous one, through meditating on selflessness, because for someone seeking liberation, it has already been shown that without realizing selflessness, even meditating on suffering, etc., cannot liberate from samsara. Selflessness is shown as the antidote to craving. Second There are three aspects to being able to abandon craving by meditating on selflessness: refuting the proof that the ritual is the antidote; refuting the proof that the ritual is not the antidote; therefore, showing that the correct view is the antidote. Refuting the proof that the ritual is the antidote. The first has three aspects: refuting that the ritual of empowerment is the antidote; refuting that the recitation of mantras is the antidote; refuting that the practice of the five fires is the antidote. Refuting that the ritual of empowerment is the antidote. First, if it is said that even if the view of the perishable is not uprooted from the root, liberation can be attained if the empowerment of the powerful one is obtained, because it is explained thus in the scripture of the powerful one. Then, for those with realization, the subject of the proposition, merely because it is explained in the scripture of the powerful one, saying that liberation is attained by the ritual of empowerment is not something that you are completely satisfied with, because you do not see the reason why the scripture of the powerful one has as its object of expression the thing as it is shown by oneself. Refuting that the recitation of mantras is the antidote. Second, if it is said that liberation from samsara is attained by reciting the mantra explained in the scripture of the powerful one, because reciting it in that way prevents the seed from producing a sprout. Then, the ritual of seeing that reciting the mantra on the seed prevents it from producing a sprout, the subject of the proposition, does not establish that it can also prevent a being from producing a future existence, because if it is established, then anointing a being with sesame oil, or burning it with fire, or boiling it, etc., would also liberate from samsara, because the mantra was recited on the seed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
