Furthermore, all the clinging that arises from holding onto things like hair on the body as beneficial to oneself is manifestly established. Refuting the Arguments for Overcoming Self-Grasping The second part has two points: refuting overcoming through contemplating suffering; refuting overcoming through generating suffering. Refuting Overcoming Through Contemplating Suffering Firstly, if it is said that by contemplating attachment to self, etc., as suffering, one abandons the thought of 'mine' towards it, then the reason 'by what means will one reverse one's mind' is not established. If so, then even if attachment to self, etc., is seen as suffering, one will not abandon the thought of 'mine,' because the cause for the arising of the thought of 'mine' is the relationship of 'self' and 'aggregate,' etc., and that relationship remains the same even if it is seen as suffering. Therefore, the reason is accepted, and the Vaisheshika school is refuted. The Samkhya school believes that the object of grasping and the grasper, Purusha (Sanskrit: Purusha, Sanskrit Romanization: puruṣa, Chinese literal meaning: self), are one, and therefore the thought of 'mine' arises towards it, and they also believe that this oneness is achieved through mutual fusion. This is unreasonable, because you do not have the thought of 'mine' towards your form, etc., because there is no relationship of aggregation between you and 'self,' nor do you see 'self' as one. One cannot think so, because seeing 'self' as beneficial is common to all external 'mine'. Refuting Overcoming Through Generating Suffering The second point is that a person who has attained liberation will not have the thought of 'mine' towards the senses, etc., and will abandon them, because the senses, etc., are seen as the cause of generating suffering, like a finger held by a poisonous snake. Therefore, the reason 'by what means will one reverse one's mind' is not established. If so, then the senses, etc., are not seen as exclusively generating suffering, because they may also be seen as the cause of some temporary pleasure. If it is said that one abandons the senses, etc., merely because one sees them mostly as generating suffering, just as one abandons most poisonous foods because one sees them as generating suffering, then neither the analogy nor the meaning is established. Because, if a person with thoughts of acceptance and rejection finds a special food, due to attachment to that pleasure, he will be free from attachment to poisonous food that contradicts that pleasure, because by craving special pleasure, he will completely abandon the small pleasure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A person without the thought of acceptance or rejection, they are such that they engage in whatever they find, like food mixed with poison, because they have no thought of acceptance or rejection and are attached to the pleasure of mere food. For example, we see some who are full of desire engaging in desire with female animals when they cannot find women. If 'I' is abandoned, then it is without the characteristic of 'I'. Secondly: The 'I' in the state of samsara (cycle of existence) is such that it will perish. Because what was previously possessed with 'I' will later become completely separated from all possessions of 'I'. This cannot be accepted, because those who believe that 'I' exists, how can they believe that 'I' will perish? They do not want to accept it. The 'I' in the state of liberation is such that, do those with self-grasping believe that it is the 'I' they are attached to? It is not so. Because it is considered to be contrary to the basis of all experiences, all terms, and all qualities such as wisdom. This is because the nature of the 'I' that is grasped by those with self-grasping is not like that contrary basis of experiences, etc. If there is self-grasping, then attachment to 'mine' will arise. The third point has two parts: the actual proof and the refutation of errors. First, the actual proof: A self-grasped one who is free from attachment to 'mine' is such that attachment to 'mine' arises, because they possess self-grasping. This is because, in all ways, self-grasping firmly clings to 'I', and attachment to 'I' is the seed of clinging to 'mine', which remains without lacking the state of completeness. Therefore, for the sake of being free from attachment to 'mine', those who contemplate 'mine' as suffering are such that, even though they strive to contemplate 'mine' as suffering, their attachment to 'I' hinders them from being free from attachment to 'mine', and it also obscures and makes invisible the faults of 'mine', because they see the qualities of 'I' and possess the seed that, like a condition, causes attachment to 'I' to arise. Refuting errors: If there is attachment to 'I', even if attachment to 'mine' cannot be separated, but if detachment is separated, then it is also separated from attachment to 'I', then the proof of attachment to 'I' is not established. Now, that state of detachment is such that, even though it is separated from attachment to it by contemplating 'mine' as suffering, that does not mean that whatever abandons 'mine' is absent. Even if attachment to 'I' is abandoned, how can 'I' be abandoned? Because it is the same as the state of not abandoning 'I'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
