Therefore, it necessarily does not separate from the self, because it necessarily clings to the self. The reason is established, because the one who clings to the self, as the subject, cannot lack the cause of clinging to the self, because it considers the self to be the source of faultless merits. There is no other way to abandon these two. The second part is divided into two points: there is no other way to abandon clinging to the self; there is no other way to abandon clinging to what belongs to the self. There is no other way to abandon clinging to the self. The first part is divided into three points: knowing the faults cannot remove the object of attachment; knowing the faults cannot reverse the actual cause; pointing out the contradictory commitment. Knowing the faults cannot remove the object of attachment. The first point is: if even though one considers the self to be faultless, one considers clinging to the self to be faulty, then what will happen from seeing faults? If it is said that this will lead to abandoning clinging to the self, then the person who sees faults in clinging to the self, as the subject, cannot abandon clinging to the self, because it has not refuted the object of attachment of clinging to the self—the self with merits. This is because he still considers the self to be meritorious. It is universally valid because clinging to the self arises from seeing the merits of the self. For the object related to seeing merits, attachment arises; for the object related to seeing faults, hatred arises. Similarly, abandoning jealousy and stinginess, etc., is because one does not see merits and faults in the object, and not like removing a thorn, by abandoning the external object to be abandoned. Knowing the faults cannot reverse the actual cause. The second point is: for the one who clings to the self, who sees faults in clinging to the self, as the subject, what can reverse the result—clinging to the self? Nothing can reverse it, because it has the complete and flawless cause of clinging to the self—considering the self to be meritorious. Considering the self to be meritorious is the cause of clinging to the self, because clinging to the self itself is because of the reason of seeing merits, that is, clinging to the self because of seeing the merits of the self. Pointing out the contradictory commitment. The third point is: what faults are seen in clinging to the self? If it is said that because it becomes the basis of suffering, it should be abandoned, then, for clinging to the self, as the subject, even if it becomes the basis of suffering, it should not be abandoned, because it always considers the self to be its own. For example, the self endures suffering --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although the limb is the support, it is the cause of the mind that clings to self, so it should not be separated from attachment. If 'I' cannot be established as having faults, because if attachment to 'I' and those of 'mine' are not helpful, then 'I' alone is not the cause of suffering. Then, attachment to 'I' and so on are also subjects, and it should be accepted that 'I' is faultless like it, because if 'I' is not helpful, then you alone are not the cause of suffering. If this is accepted, then attachment to 'I' and 'I' both should not be separated from attachment, because both of them are faultless. Refuting contradictions to what was said. Suffering cannot be abandoned by meditating on aggregates etc. The first part has two points: stating the opponent's view, and explaining the refutation. Stating the opponent's view: The first point is: 'If, like abandoning a limb seized by a snake by meditating on the cause of suffering, even if there is self-grasping, it can be abandoned by meditating on attachment to 'I' and 'mine' as the cause of suffering, then the pervasion 'necessarily attached to I' is not established.' Explaining the refutation: The second part has two points: refuting the example, and refuting the meaning. Refuting the example: The first point is: This limb seized by a snake, this is a subject, it is not established that you abandon it merely by meditating on suffering, because you abandon it by destroying the thought of 'mine', and conversely, if there is a thought of 'mine', you will not abandon it. Refuting the meaning: The second part has seven points: If there is grasping of 'mine', it is impossible to abandon; if 'mine' is abandoned, there is no characteristic of 'mine'; if there is self-grasping, attachment to 'mine' will arise; the effort of meditating on suffering will become meaningless; if 'I' is faultless, there is no object of attachment and abandonment; knowing the faults cannot abandon attachment; because there is no harm to the cause, it cannot be abandoned. If there is grasping of 'mine', it is impossible to abandon: The first part has two points: if there is grasping of 'mine', there is no attachment and abandonment; refuting the argument for destroying the grasping of 'mine'. If there is grasping of 'mine', there is no attachment and abandonment: The first point is: That self-grasping person who knows that 'mine' has faults, this is a subject, from where does the attachment and abandonment of 'mine' come? It is not established, because in what way can the grasping of 'mine' be prevented? It cannot be prevented, because the aggregates etc. 'mine' are the support of enjoyment, and are considered to be the cause of benefit to oneself. The pervasion: Just like hair, nails, etc. that fall off from the body, because they are not considered to be the cause of benefit to oneself, a mind of aversion will arise, but not to other bodies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
