If that were not the case, how could it be explained that even a mind with faults can give rise to the path? For a mind that has been transformed through the practice of the path, faults do not arise again, because faults do not have the power to arise again. Explanation of the reasons for lacking power in detail: This is divided into four aspects: the ways of holding onto what is to be abandoned and the antidote are contradictory, and the antidote truly takes effect; the difference between intrinsic nature and what is adventitious causes the previous lack of power; even if there is power, the antidote can be generated effortlessly; an antidote with three special characteristics cannot be reversed even with effort. The ways of holding onto what is to be abandoned and the antidote are contradictory, and the antidote truly takes effect: First, why is there no power? For this mind that has been transformed through the practice of the path, you do not have the power to generate faults such as self-grasping again, because in general, according to the Sutra school, a non-erroneous consciousness holds onto the dharma or reality of an object in the way that the object exists, and the object also becomes the cause of the arising of this consciousness in the way that it exists. Therefore, you have this nature of a non-erroneous consciousness holding onto the object in the way that it exists. You deviate from holding onto the reality of the object due to adventitious causes, and to reverse this, it is necessary to rely on a valid cognition that is harmful to the cause itself. For example, an unstable mind arises due to adventitious causes and is easily separated, like mistaking a rope for a snake. The difference between intrinsic nature and what is adventitious causes the previous lack of power: Second, defilements, for a mind that has been transformed into the nature of realizing selflessness through the practice of the path, do not have the power to harm later, because even when selflessness was not seen before, there was no power to harm the mind intrinsically. The reason is established, because the nature of the mind is luminosity, and defilements are adventitious. This shows that when the intrinsic nature was previously pure, there was no power to harm intrinsically, so when one is later free from adventitious defilements, there is no power to harm adventitiously. If it is explained as being at the time when one has just realized selflessness, the meaning of the previous two lines cannot be expressed. Even if there is power, the antidote can be generated effortlessly: Third, even if it is assumed that there is power to generate faults, then for the entity of the transformed mindstream, defilements do not have the power to remain permanently, because defilements --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because they possess the essence of being able to generate the vision of selflessness, which harms all (afflictions). Just as fire cannot last long on damp ground. This shows that even if the abandonment caused by worldly paths weakens during the learning stage, it can be quickly restored. Especially, the antidote that does not possess the three characteristics cannot be reversed even with effort. Fourth, for the mind that has the characteristic of completely pacifying all harm and possessing happiness, because it is harmless; for the mind that has impermanence etc. as its object, because it enters the correct meaning; for the mind that has transformed into the nature of realizing selflessness through thorough habituation, the subject. Even if effort is made, it cannot prevent distorted wisdom from generating faults, because the mind itself is holding the side of the path—the realization of selflessness—that is, it has become its nature. Refuting the argument against contradictory grasping. The third part is divided into three points: Merely having different ways of grasping is not an antidote. Merely suppressing one side is not an antidote. Therefore, the antidote that completely eradicates everything is explained. Merely having different ways of grasping is not an antidote. The first point is: If the vision of selflessness becomes the antidote to self-grasping because the object and aspect of selflessness are contrary to self-grasping, then do attachment and hatred also become antidotes to each other because their objects and aspects are contrary? Answer: Attachment and anger, the subject. Even if the ways of grasping are different, they are not harmful to each other, because they both originate from the same cause of self-grasping, and they can also become the cause and effect of each other. Merely suppressing one side is not an antidote. The second point is: Haven't it been said that cultivating loving-kindness is the antidote to hatred, and cultivating ugliness is the antidote to attachment, etc.? Why is only the realization of selflessness explained as the antidote? Answer: Loving-kindness etc. that take sentient beings as their object, the subject. It is not completely eradicating faults, because they are not contrary to ignorance and the way of grasping, therefore they cannot harm it. Generally speaking, because all faults have ignorance as their root. The previous argument is established, because the root of faults—ignorance—is also the view of the aggregates, and it is not contrary to the way of grasping of the view of the aggregates. The Vaibhashikas etc. say: The view of the aggregates is a distorted perception of external objects, while ignorance is merely the blocking of reason, therefore they cannot be equated. Answer: Ignorance, the subject. It is unreasonable to think that ignorance is merely the blocking of reason other than the view of the aggregates, because reason is wisdom, and the object is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
